Blackstone Heritage Corridor is a nonprofit organization working with community partners and providing strong leadership to preserve, promote and celebrate the Valley’s historic, natural and recreational resources for current and future generations.

THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Recreational Resources Manager is responsible for advancing access, connectivity, and engagement across the Blackstone River Valley’s outdoor recreational assets. This new position will lead and collaborate in planning, partnership coordination, and community engagement related to the Blackstone River Greenway/Bikeway, the Blackstone River, and related trails and open spaces throughout the Corridor. This position requires strong project management skills, relationship‑building, and a passion for outdoor recreation, community connection, and heritage landscapes.

POSITION

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the design and implementation of BHC’s Recreational Resources Development Strategy (RRDS), outlining short‑ and long‑term priorities for access, connectivity, and engagement.
  • Conduct baseline assessments of existing recreational assets and identify gaps and opportunities for access, safety, and interpretation.
  • Advance advocacy for the completion of the Blackstone River Greenway/Bikeway and identify opportunities for connectivity between park nodes, trails, and waterways.
  • Develop and maintain a shared project dashboard and other tools to track milestones, outcomes, and stakeholder engagement related to the Blackstone River Greenway/Bikeway.
  • Explore and recommend sustainable financial models, including fee‑based programming, rentals, and/or training initiatives that align with BHC’s mission and the RRDS.
Partnership & Community Engagement
  • Serve as BHC’s lead convener for recreational collaboration, maintaining regular communication with NPS, MA‑DCR, MA‑DOT, RI‑DOT, RI‑DEM, municipalities, partner organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitate public listening sessions, working groups, and meetings to gather input on recreational priorities.
  • Support volunteer and ambassador programs (Trail Ambassadors, Bikeway Ambassadors, Paddle Club, etc.) to enhance on‑the‑ground engagement and community ownership.
  • Co‑lead the planning of a Greenways & Waterways Summit to share findings, foster collaboration, and inspire additional implementation of recreational initiatives across the Valley.
Communications & Advocacy
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to share project progress, develop public‑facing materials, and expand awareness of outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • Explore storytelling, mapping and other communication mediums to share history of Blackstone Valley environment.
  • Represent BHC at public meetings, partner events, and regional conferences, articulating the organization’s role as a convener and advocate for recreation in the Valley.
  • Contribute to reports, presentations, and donor materials that align recreation initiatives with BHC’s Legacy Campaign priorities.
Fund Development & Sustainability
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify private and public funding opportunities that support long‑term recreational planning and implementation.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, budgets, and reports related to recreation‑based projects.
  • Support donor engagement through storytelling, events, and progress updates related to outdoor initiatives.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in recreation programming, outdoor planning, community development, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated success leading multi‑stakeholder projects and partnerships.
  • Knowledge of trail or greenway planning, outdoor programming, and/or environmental stewardship.
  • Experience in nonprofit, public, or cross‑agency collaboration a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation and public presentation experience.
