Position SummaryThe UMass Memorial Health Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Critical Care is a 12-month program focused on preparing Physician Assistants (PAs) and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) for a successful career in critical care medicine. The fellowship includes clinical and didactic curricula designed to provide a solid foundation in the management of critically ill patients. Our rotations provide APP fellows with exposure to a wide variety of complex disease processes with rotations in the medical, surgical, trauma, and neurological critical care units.
The curriculum includes protected academic time for didactics, simulation-based learning experiences, procedural training, and journal club.
The PA or NP fellow practices under the general supervision of a physician. Their scope of practice includes: obtaining a complete medical history; performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and/or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures; and counseling patients and families under supervision of a physician.
In addition, the PA or NP fellow is required to participate in a program of instruction provided by the Fellowship Program and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of this Program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.
- Attend didactic and simulation sessions every other week
- Attend Journal Clubs and present patient case studies
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests
- Conduct in-depth health histories and physical examinations
- Analyses data collected to determine health status and identify differential diagnoses based on history, physical exam, and clinical findings.
- Develop and implement care plans with physicians and patients
- Manage therapeutic interventions and perform advanced procedures
- Reassess and modify plan treatment plans to achieve medical and health goals.
- Documents and communicate care outcomes and clinical findings to determine effectiveness of plan of care.
- Master s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (preferably ACNP/AGACNP)
- Eligible for Massachusetts NP license
- Eligible for Board Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
- Eligible for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
- BLS and ACLS
- Master s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Eligible for Massachusetts license, issued by the Physician Assistant Board
- Eligible for certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Eligible for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
- BLS and ACLS
- Develop a foundation of Critical Care knowledge in a supportive learning environment
- 25 didactic and simulation-based learning experiences over one year
- Mentorship by experienced Critical Care APPs
- Cross training in Medical and Surgical ICUs
- Elective rotation in the Cardiac ICU
- Attend Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS), Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) and a 1-day Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) workshop
