Job Summary
We are looking for a Shop Trailer Mechanic I. This dedicated on‑site shop position focuses on DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, and brake chambers. Under the supervision of a higher‑level technician, you can perform more advanced repairs and continue to develop advanced mechanical skills. The role requires compliance with company policies and high-level performance metrics.
Duties- Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Determine parts required for each job independently and obtain them through the Shop Parts Department.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment and assist with cleanup at the end of each day.
- Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform tasks; work with and evaluate technical information related to the job.
- Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations.
- Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations effectively.
- Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, and behave confidentially with sensitive information.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document according to company standards and upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and discoveries on Repair Orders using a company‑issued device and/or Karmak application.
- Accurately complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to most Standard Repair Times.
- Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss Repair Order findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
- Participate in and complete all company required safety training.
- Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems, including brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
- Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
- High School Diploma or GED and up to 2 years of related experience.
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary for the job.
- OEM training and certifications are preferred.
- Participate in and complete all company required training.
- Candidate must successfully complete a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
- A current and valid DOT medical card with over four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical; otherwise a DOT physical is required.
- Safe drivers needed with a 3‑year MVR review required. Candidate must hold a valid state driver’s license and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
- ASE T8 (PMI) certification
- ASE 608/609 certification
- Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
- Understand the implications of new information for problem solving and decision making.
- Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks without tiring.
- Ability to judge distances accurately.
- Ability to communicate information succinctly and engage in effective two‑way communication.
- Ability to determine the type of tools and equipment needed.
