Occupational Health Specialist Nurse

The closing date is 03 June 2026.

The post is based at The Working Well Centre, Worcester, but also involves cross‑site working, including travel to Coventry and Warwick to support the health and wellbeing needs of our workforce.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertake comprehensive evidence‑based occupational health assessments, provide risk‑based interventions and offer expert OH advice in the management of sickness absence cases.
  • Support the development of junior team members by sharing expertise and developing others’ competencies in OH & WB.
  • Participate in policy and process development, auditing and other governance‑related activity.
  • Contribute to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives while ensuring compliance with professional standards and organisational policies.
  • Support the day‑to‑day operational running of the service.
Job responsibilities

Job Purpose: To support and contribute to the effective provision of a high‑quality Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service to the Trust and other public sector and private organisations.

  • Promote and maintain a systematic, holistic approach to occupational health and wellbeing provision, its implementation and evaluation.
  • Identify and maintain a safe working environment and prevent ill‑health associated with work.
  • Receive, interpret and manage highly complex health information from employees, managers and/or HR, leading to potential restrictions on an employee’s job role.
  • Provide specialised advice regarding work health assessments and fitness‑for‑work assessments in line with professional standards, legal obligations and local policy.
  • Undertake formal clinical audit programmes and evaluation, supporting the strategic direction of the service and assure quality of clinical care and advice.
  • Provide clear, visible professional advice to employees within the Trust and external clients.
  • Provide management and professional leadership to Occupational Health Nurse Advisors and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist the Head of OH & Wellbeing in leading and advancing clinical practice in line with DH guidelines and legislation.
  • Supply all aspects of occupational health clinical practice: assessment, planning and implementation of care, specialist advice and record keeping in accordance with departmental protocols.
Communication and relationship skills
  • Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive and sometimes contentious information with clients, overcoming significant barriers to acceptance.
  • Communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team, with departments and organisations to ensure services are well planned and co‑ordinated.
  • Respond to verbal, electronic, written and telephone enquiries in a helpful manner and prioritise messages.
  • Maintain and respect patient confidentiality, escalating cases to the Head of OH & Wellbeing or Occupational Health Physician when appropriate.
Planning and organisational skills
  • Plan delivery of specialist occupational health nursing care and take overall responsibility for the department in the Head of Occupational Health / Deputy OH Manager’s absence.
  • Deal with clinical queries and complex case management, including blood‑borne virus risk assessments and incident follow‑up.
  • Provide senior support to junior team members and maintain best practice in line with relevant legislation.
Client Care
  • Promptly produce reports to support clients and managers.
  • Provide specialist advice and develop specialised programmes of care for staff requiring occupational health support.
  • Ensure all clinical care complies with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Faculty of Occupational Health medicine ethical guidance.
  • Assess individual risk for employees presenting with perceived stress and take appropriate action.
  • Provide support and signposting to employees through potentially difficult or distressing situations.
  • Undertake any other duties deemed appropriate to the band when requested by senior staff.
Person Specification
  • Registered Nurse on the NMC register.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health or on pursuit thereof.
