Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will provide a safe, efficient, and accurate dispensing and prescription service, supporting the clinical team to deliver high‑quality patient care. Working within practice policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and NHS guidelines, you will process repeat prescriptions, dispense medications, maintain accurate dispensing records, and ensure medicines are stored, handled, and supplied safely.
You will be responsible for maintaining effective stock control, managing prescription charges and financial records, supporting medication supplies to care homes and patients requiring dosette trays, and ensuring compliance with Controlled Drugs regulations. The role also involves responding to medicines safety alerts, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organisation within the dispensary, using clinical IT systems confidently, and contributing to the practice's compliance with CQC standards.
The post holder will work collaboratively with GPs, pharmacists, clinicians, and the wider practice team to provide a responsive, patient‑centred dispensing service and undertake any additional duties required to support the safe and efficient running of the dispensary.
Job description Main Duties and Responsibilities- Process and issue prescriptions in line with NHS repeat prescribing guidelines and local procedures
- Ensure prescription charges are collected and FP10 documentation is correctly completed
- Handle and record all practice monies accurately, ensuring correct storage and banking
- Use clinical IT systems to support dispensing and maintain accurate records
- Manage and process invoices and dispensary correspondence appropriately
- Support stock control, ensuring safe storage, continuity of supply, and minimisation of waste
- Ensure safe storage of medicines, including refrigerated items with temperature monitoring
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and equipment upkeep within the dispensary
- Prepare and dispense medications for patients, care homes, and dosette trays, including MAR charts
- Lead/support medication supply processes for designated care homes where required
- Respond appropriately to drug alerts under supervision
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times, including Controlled Drugs handling and record keeping
- Carry out prescription deliveries when required
- Ensure all dispensing activity is accurately recorded and checked against prescriptions
- Liaise with clinical staff when queries arise regarding prescriptions or medication safety
- Support compliance with CQC standards and practice policies
- Contribute to maintaining an efficient, safe, and patient‑focused dispensary service
- Maintain patient and practice confidentiality at all times
- Follow all Health & Safety and infection control procedures
- Promote equality, diversity, and respectful patient care
- Participate in training, mandatory learning, and personal development
- Work effectively as part of a team and independently when required
- Contribute to quality improvement, audits, and service development
- Manage workload efficiently and take responsibility for own performance
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
