Volunteer Lock-Keeper (Bratch Locks, Staffs & Worcester Canal)
Lock keepers are an integral part of the visitor experience on Britain’s canals. As the "face of the waterway", modern volunteer lock keepers welcome visitors, assist boaters through the locks, and maintain the area.
The role is suitable for people who enjoy outdoor work, want to support the Canal & River Trust, and are enthusiastic and eager to learn.
Applicants must be over 18 and able to volunteer at least one day a week. After selection, training and induction, the role typically starts fully around April and runs through October (local variations may apply).
What you will be doing- Assisting boats through the locks
- Talking to customers
- Picking litter and/or performing minor vegetation works
- Completing volunteer registration, including declaration of unspent convictions and risk assessment as required.
- Excellent communication skills – engaging with visitors.
- Practical maintenance skills – ensuring locks remain functional.
- Team working – working with other volunteers and staff.
- Opportunity to meet fellow volunteers, learn new skills and explore further volunteering opportunities.
