Royal Voluntary Service has an opportunity available for a Retail Senior Customer Assistant to join our team at Worcester Royal Hospital, Newtown Road, WR5 1JG
. This is a part‑time, permanent role with a competitive salary of £12.96 per hour (FTE £23,599 per annum).
Royal Voluntary Service hospital cafes, shops and trolleys are part of the NHS fabric and an asset in their own right. Staffed by employees and volunteers, we provide an outstanding range of beverages and healthy food choices that fund volunteer action in hospitals and the community.
Working alongside a friendly team, you will support the day‑to‑day management of our busy retail shop at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
In This Role, You Will Be Responsible For- Providing friendly, helpful and efficient service at all times
- Welcoming customers, informing them of specials, answering questions and accepting orders and payments
- Operating the till and cashing up
- Maintaining a high level of cleanliness, complying with Health and Safety and food hygiene standards, and keeping all areas tidy
- Ensuring stock and displays are replenished regularly and ordering supplies when required
- Engaging with volunteers to direct and lead by example, ensuring a positive volunteer experience
- Supervising the site and team in the absence of the Retail Service Manager and supporting the manager to achieve KPIs
Hours: 30 hours per week – 5 shifts from 7 days a week, 6 hours a shift on a rota basis, including weekends. Our retail sites are open every day, including bank holidays. Paid overtime may be available during busy periods or to cover absences.
What You'll Bring- Previous experience in a retail or cafe environment, including team management
- Knowledge of EPOS systems is advantageous
- Experience of general administrative processes
- Knowledge of Food Safety & Health & Safety procedures – full training will be provided
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong organisational, delegating and prioritising abilities
- Calm and professional in a fast‑paced environment
- Excellent customer service orientation
- Experience with email and internet required
- Enjoy working within a passionate team and independently when necessary
- Flexible to business needs and able to attend out‑of‑hours training if required
- Provide friendly and efficient customer service with excellent product knowledge
- Supervise the team, ensuring food preparation meets legal safety standards, and assist at peak trade
- Operate the till and perform cash reconciliation, including opening and closing the service
- Receive deliveries, distribute, maintain and rotate stock, and assist with accurate stock takes
- Engage volunteers, leading by example to create a positive experience
- Maintain high cleanliness standards, adhering to Health and Safety and food hygiene regulations
- Support the manager in achieving KPIs, training and developing the team
- Communicate performance feedback and challenge where improvement is needed
- Be available to work any day of the week, including weekends, and occasionally out‑of‑hours for training or stock takes
- Identify and meet individual customer needs with professional, high‑quality service
- Deliver on objectives, meet deadlines, and see tasks through to completion
- Collaborate with the Volunteering Team, accepting responsibility for volunteers’ journeys
- Support others, contribute to joint activities, and work well in a team
- Ensure quality orientation by checking and completing tasks accurately
- Lead and inspire others to achieve goals
- Follow directions, deliver accurately, and cooperate with others

- Salary of £12.96 per hour (FTE £23,599 per annum)
- 26 days’ holiday pro‑rata plus paid statutory bank holidays pro‑rata
- Up to 2 days paid volunteer leave per year through the employer‑supported volunteer scheme
