Overview
2026 Fitter Advanced Apprenticeship, National Grid Energy Distribution (Worcester/Banbury). Earn while you learn and develop into a Power Networks Craftsperson, achieving a City & Guilds Level 2 Qualification in Electrical Engineering. The apprenticeship lasts approximately three years with a 12-week induction at a Training Centre.

Our teams keep the lights on, working outdoors with underground cables, overhead lines and substations operating between 230 and 132,000 volts. The RoleAs a Power Networks Fitter you will be responsible for the safe construction, maintenance and repair of the electrical power network. You’ll work on distribution systems up to 66kV (or 132kV if in a Projects team) and install/maintain high voltage plant and apparatus within substations, including transformers, switch gear and cable terminations. You will represent National Grid and carry out work handed down by other areas of the business.
Responsibilities- Construct distribution substations and install plant
- Carry out routine inspection, maintenance and repairs of substation and protection equipment
- Install and terminate secondary wiring (small wiring)
- Record asset routes, details and positions
- Record plant details
- Test earthing, voltage, phasing and phase rotation
- Write outage requests and switching programmes for simple outages
- Excellent communication skills; the ability to interact with customers, colleagues and internal stakeholders
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Safety awareness; ability to follow safety instructions and wear protective equipment

- Age 18+ by the start date (1 September 2026)
- GCSE English, Maths and Science at A*-C/9-4 or Level 2 equivalents
- Two additional GCSEs A*-C/9-4 or Level 2 qualifications in any subject
- Alternatively, a recognised Level 3 qualification in Electrical Engineering with GCSE Maths and English at C/4 or above
- Evidence of qualifications required before appointment;
Level 3 Electrical Engineering qualifications cannot be substituted for the minimum entry requirements
Evidence of qualification certificates will be required prior to appointment. A basic DBS check will be completed if offered a position.
Start Date and LocationStart date:
September 2026. No annual leave during the first 12 weeks of training. You should live within approximately 30 minutes of the depot you are applying for; only one application per candidate. If matched to more than one location, suitability will be considered during the process.
Starting salary: £18,514 with planned increases as you gain experience:
- Year 2 – £24,938
- Year 2½ – £32,473 (Development role)
- Year 3 – £37,770
- Completion – £43,491
