Job Overview

Senior Clinical / Counselling Psychologist to lead the psychology service within the Waltham Forest Community Learning Disabilities Team (CLDT). 0.40 wte sessions in a multi-disciplinary team working closely with health and social services colleagues to provide a well‑coordinated, high quality service for adults with learning disabilities. The post-holder will be supported by the Principal Psychologist and the Professional Lead of the Learning Disabilities Psychological Service in NELFT.

Our psychological therapies provision within the community learning disability team includes local Talking Therapies clinical psychologists, clinical behavioural specialists, art therapists, systemic/family therapists, Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP), administrators and trainees from the Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling training courses based in London. We work closely with the service strengthening the mainstreaming agenda for people with learning disabilities, developing trauma‑informed and culturally sensitive care, and offering opportunities for CPD, peer support and service.

Responsibilities
  • Provide locality leadership to support delivery of a high‑quality learning disabilities psychological service for NELFT patients, their families and carers.
  • Lead and manage the Clinical Learning Disability Team, including operational and professional management of team members.
  • Manage caseloads, staffing, and other resources.
  • Develop and implement long‑term strategies with the Principal Psychologist and Professional Lead to evolve psychological services in line with national and local guidance.
  • Provide clinical leadership and specialist assessments/interventions within your areas of expertise relevant to people with learning disabilities and their families and carers.
  • Provide clinical supervision to key psychologists, assistants, trainees, and other professionals.
  • Oversee research, audit, and evaluation within the service.
  • Maintain excellent relationships with other NHS services and external agencies (Neighbourhood Services, Police, Probation Service, Education, Advocacy, PALS, Benefits and Voluntary Services).
  • Provide line management to the psychological practitioners within the locality.
  • Build and sustain professional relationships with agencies to ensure a quality package of care for service users and carers.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology or an equivalent.
  • HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable
  • Post‑doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
Experience
  • Minimum two years working as a qualified practitioner psychologist within Learning Disabilities Psychological services.
  • Eligibility to supervise doctoral course trainees, CAP, assistant psychologists.
  • Experience supervising qualified psychological professionals.
Knowledge
  • Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for people with learning disabilities.
  • Knowledge of legislation and health care guidelines and their implications for clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health.
