About the Role

This is an exciting brand‑new technical role at Southern Water, perfect for someone who wants to get stuck in and help shape how we optimise and operate our water supply network. As a Strategic Control Hydraulic Analyst, you’ll play a central part in improving system performance through advanced hydraulic modelling and strategic analysis.

You’ll work closely with Operations, Operational Control, Engineering & Construction (E&C), and Engineering Technical Services (ETS) to support the Safe Control of Operations (SCO) programme. This includes modelling high‑risk outages, forecasting storage, and helping develop strategies that balance customer service, system resilience and leakage performance.

You will also contribute to capital delivery projects and long‑term network planning by providing specialist hydraulic insight, mass balance modelling, and scenario simulations – giving you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on how we manage and optimise our network.

What You Will Be Responsible For
  • Supporting the programme management of annual outage plans and day‑to‑day SCO activities, balancing operational risk
  • Undertaking hydraulic modelling for planned Water Supply (WS) activities, including mass balance modelling, scenario simulation, and storage forecasting
  • Monitoring and analysing system performance, including low‑pressure issues, DMA management, and water quality considerations
  • Developing and updating hydraulic models using tools such as Info Works, ArcGIS, and other network modelling platforms
  • Providing specialist technical input through the Risk & Value (R&V) and Solution Development stages for capital projects
  • Supporting incident response through hydraulic modelling and simulation within the incident management framework (Network Risk Advisor)
  • Working with Operations and other stakeholders to develop and drive outage recovery strategies
  • Contributing technical insights to Continuous Improvement initiatives and business‑wide optimisation work
Additional Requirements Specific To

The Role
  • Collaboration with Operational Control Centre (OCC) production planners on forward outage planning (in week, in month, and up to a rolling year ahead)
  • Will involve occasional travel to sites and operational locations
  • Ability to work flexibly to support incidents when required
Essential

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant field
  • Expertise in hydraulic modelling software such as Info Works, Aquator, or similar
  • Strong knowledge of water abstraction, treatment, transmission, and distribution networks
  • Proficiency in GIS tools (ArcGIS, Map Info) and advanced Excel / Visual Basic
  • Skilled in data handling, interpretation, and presenting technical insights to stakeholders
  • Understanding of serviceability risk, water quality compliance, and the water regulatory framework
Desirable
  • Experience with in the UK water industry or a related regulated utility
  • Knowledge of regulatory obligations and statutory requirements in the water sector
  • Experience collaborating on capital delivery or engineering projects
