SummaryEmergency Medical Technicians possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients/residents ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life‑threatening emergencies. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance.
Job DescriptionIn an Ambulance setting, the EMT will drive a mobile intensive care unit to a specified location, following instructions from an emergency medical dispatcher. The EMT will respond to emergency calls, administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in pre‑hospital settings, obtain the patient/resident’s medical history and vital statistics, assist in assessing the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize patients/residents for emergency needs during transportation.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize necessary medical equipment to treat the patient/resident and ascertain the extent of injuries or illness.
- Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information, arrange transfer of patients/residents, report patient/resident information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner, or receive instructions for further treatment.
- Ensure the ambulance is clean and washed, and kept in a neat orderly condition; after each call, restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies, clean all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, check all equipment so that the ambulance is ready for the next run, and maintain ambulance in efficient operating condition.
- Perform physical activities including, but not limited to, considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials.
- Successfully complete a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards.
- Attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure; keep abreast of new developments in the field or maintain existing knowledge.
- In a hospital-based setting, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), assist in performing patient/resident care services and support activities of the patient/resident care unit.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department throughout flow and anticipate workflow; be multi‑skilled to provide expanded bedside services.
- Adhere to age‑related patient/resident care protocols, build rapport or provide emotional support, observe, record, and report vital signs, measures input and output, collect non‑invasive specimens, perform simple diagnostic tests, and record data in the medical record.
- Prepare equipment during basic examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments using aseptic techniques; maintain equipment, order supplies, and clean and restock treatment areas.
- Assisting with the transfer of patients/residents to and from procedural areas including Radiology and other areas; communicate directly with physicians, nursing staff, patients/residents, and family to report changes.
- Knowledge and ability to perform high‑quality basic life support (BLS) and apply a LUCAS device; prepare and position stable patients/residents during transport.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Training Program required for licensing.
Must possess thorough knowledge of EMT principles, practices and techniques; knowledge of how equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required; depending on location, national registry status as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level may be required. Depending on state requirements, individuals may need a state license. National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses (ICS
100, 200, 700) completed, and continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and good driving record. Must be 18 years or older, approval needed for those under 21 to drive. Driving policies and insurance verification determined by department leader.
