Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department at Singleton Hospital, Swansea are looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual to join their team as a Specialty Doctor. This will be a full time or job share fixed term post up to 31st March 2027.

This post will be supporting various sub specialty clinics in Singleton and Neath Port Talbot hospitals and potential cataract surgery. You will also participate in the service on call rota at Singleton Hospital.

You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

The successful candidate will be working together with the wider clinical team of Consultants, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Junior Doctors and other Allied Health Professionals to provide high quality, safe and effective clinical care. Working as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.

Although this postis not recognised for training, participation in educational programmes, audit and research will be encouraged and supported. There is an active Multi Professional Education Centre and Medical Staff are encouraged to use its facilities. There are also comprehensive Medical Libraries at all sites managed by Chartered Librarians.

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services:
Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Swansea is Wales' second-largest city, and sits on the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. An ideal base for exploring South-West Wales, there is also much on offer for visitors in Swansea itself. • Full GMC/GDC Registration
• Part 1 of the FRCOphth or recognised equivalent shall have full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council; and shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty;
  
  or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.

• Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
• Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
• Up to date with current practices in ophthalmology
• Working as part of the management team
• Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
• Evidence of participation in, progressing and completing audit
• Experience of ophthalmology
• Liaison with other agencies
• Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS working practices and systems.

• Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
• Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate
• Ability to manage own time and work load
• Experience of the assessment of emergencies
• Able to work as a member of a team or on own
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to communicate sensitively with patients, relatives and staff
• Understanding of information systems and technology
