Consultant Community Paediatrician

Job Overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Community Paediatrics in the East IHC, to assist in providing comprehensive and specialist child health services across North Wales. The post will be based at the Children's Centre, Wrexham Maelor Hospital, with cross‑county work encouraged. A particular interest in adoption and fostering work would be desirable, but there is flexibility to develop specific areas of interest.

The post holder will support a lead role in safeguarding as county lead. The appointee will be part of a busy and cheerful department, emphasizing top‑quality community‑based care to local children and young people. Close joint working is with the Community Paediatricians and specialist paediatric nursing teams including Preschool Developmental Nursing, School Age Learning Disability, Health Visitors and School Nurses, Diana Nursing, and therapy services.

We have excellent relationships with acute colleagues and tertiary specialist services at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool.

• Provide community paediatric services within Wrexham, with cross‑country work to Flintshire as agreed.
• Work with a team of community paediatricians to provide a population‑based paediatric service.
• Actively participate in the clinical governance programme, supporting undergraduate and postgraduate staff.
• Maintain skills through continuous professional development and an annual appraisal.
• Provide clinical supervision for other community paediatricians and educational supervision for specialist paediatric trainees.
• Participate in children’s management meetings for the service.

• Full GMC Specialist Registration in Paediatrics or to obtain CCT within 6 months of interview date. CESR applicants must have GMC Specialist Registration at application.
• RCPCH membership.
• Evidence of achieving Level 3 competencies in Community Child Health.
• MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
• Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training.
• Valid BLS Training.

• Higher degree (MSc, PhD or MD). Areas of interest to complement those of present Consultants.
• DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas.
• CCT or equivalent in subspeciality of Community Child Health.
• Valid APLS and NLS.
• Evidence of management training.
• MSc in medical education and clinical/educational supervision experience.

• Achieved competencies relating to General Paediatric Training, usually after 2 years of General Professional Training in Paediatrics.
• Demonstrated competencies equivalent to Higher Specialist Paediatric Training, including usually 3 years in Community Child Health (after 5 years of Higher Specialist Training in total).
• Level 3 child protection training or above.
• Experience, interest and enthusiasm in teaching medical students and junior medical staff.

• Experience in other child health areas such as child mental health, public health, paediatric neurology, epilepsy or palliative care.
• Specialist experience in one or more areas of Community Child Health to lead that area.
