Aqueduct Operations Operative (Pontcysyllte Aqueduct)
Purpose of the Role:
Deliver the safe, controlled, and efficient movement of powered and unpowered boating traffic across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct by actively managing navigation, enforcing safety requirements, and providing a high-quality experience for boaters and visitors. This role will operate in designated hours of peak demand. Reporting to the local Operational Team, the role will be supported by on‑site Trust colleagues at Trevor Basin and will be an important part not only in reinforcing safety at the site but also in reinforcing visitor experience and thereby promoting this important World Heritage Site.
- Navigation & Traffic Control – Control entry and exit to the aqueduct in line with the operating model implementing single‑direction navigation. Use stop/go paddles to regulate movement, manage batches of craft on a one‑way system and in conjunction with colleague Operatives. Provide a link with both Operations Team and on‑site Destinations & Attractions team/volunteers to ensure effective communication across the site.
- Safety & Risk Management – Maintain safe navigation at all times. Enforce no overtaking and low speeds as well as safe distancing of craft. Monitor boat behaviour and intervene where needed, providing relevant advice to boaters and aqueduct users. In accordance with Trust safety procedures, report and record incidents of concern where necessary. Help manage any safety incidents in line with Trust procedures and in conjunction with local Trust staff and, where necessary, emergency services or other partner organisations.
- Queue & Flow Management – Manage queues on the Aqueduct and at either end during peak times. Adjust flow timings to reduce congestion. Communicate waiting times and delays to customers and users.
- Customer Service – Provide a visible, friendly and professional presence for the Canal & River Trust. Assist inexperienced users on the canal as well as moderate and mitigate towpath congestion. Answer queries and support visitor experience in conjunction with on‑site colleagues.

Outdoor role based on the Aqueduct. Access to Trust welfare facilities on‑site. Busy and dynamic tourist environment in a renowned World Heritage site. Weekend and peak period working.
