The job holder will work as part of a team providing 24‑hour cover at an Approved Premises (AP) including security and monitoring services.

The post requires the delivery of a full range of duties with residents on probation while they are resident at the Approved Premises. This includes supporting the risk management and sentence plan objectives, reporting significant changes relating to risk or re‑offending, and ensuring that residents and the premises remain safe and secure throughout each shift.

Summary

The post involves substantial out‑of‑hours work, including night duty and weekends, and may require covering other Approved Premises during staff absences. Equality and inclusion principles must be upheld at all times, and all information handled in the role must be treated as confidential.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties
  • Contribute to effective team practice, communicate and collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency of work practices and a positive work environment.
  • Communicate key risk issues to colleagues at handover and throughout the shift, and liaise with Offender Managers, Stand‑by Manager and partner agencies such as Police, health professionals and drug/alcohol services.
  • Undertake regular inspections of the building, including cellars and grounds, record any occurrences, damage or defects, and monitor CCTV equipment.
  • Maintain an active presence in the AP, engage with residents in a pro‑social manner and support their risk management plans and general wellbeing.
  • Engage with and monitor high‑risk residents, motivate compliance, and challenge abusive or aggressive behaviour.
  • Report significant changes relating to risk and re‑offending to the agreed enforcement procedures, contributing to residents’ risk‑management plans.
  • Support sentence‑plan objectives by engaging residents in purposeful activities agreed with the AP Manager and Offender Manager.
  • Ensure the AP is locked and secure during curfew, confirming residents’ wellbeing overnight.
  • Act as the first/emergency point of contact out of hours.
  • Provide accurate information and risk assessment to Offender Manager and/or Escalate to Out‑of‑Hours Manager where necessary.
  • Create and maintain a safe working environment in line with Health and Safety legislation, Safe Systems of Work and risk assessments, reporting incidents to the Manager.
  • Undertake health‑safety, fire alarm, curfews and room checks following procedures.
  • Conduct room searches based on concerns around risk.
  • Pack up residents’ possessions as directed.
  • Deliver purposeful activities linked to sentence‑plan objectives.
  • Carry out effective induction of residents.
  • Administer medication in line with prescribed procedures and audit medication sheets.
  • Perform drug and alcohol tests as required by the risk‑management plan.
  • Provide first aid if a resident is injured or self‑harm.
  • Maintain AP records and files and complete incident reports.
  • Implement safeguarding duties for children in accordance with statutory responsibilities.
  • Support visitor and contractor management, monitor phone calls and ensure health and safety compliance.
  • Model pro‑social behaviour, reinforce positive attitudes and challenge anti‑social behaviour.

Experience
  • Experience working with a diverse range of people who have experienced social or personal difficulties.
Technical
  • Minimum 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English and Maths) or equivalent qualification. Demonstrate high level numeracy and literacy skills needed to read, understand and interpret policies, and write reports and correspondence for internal and external stakeholders.
  • IT skills:
    Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Language Requirements
  • Proficient in spoken English at a level sufficient to fulfil all responsibilities of the role. Welsh is an essential requirement for this post.
