General Summary

The pharmacist assumes responsibility for the day-to-day comprehensive, customer-oriented pharmacy services provided on his/her shift. The pharmacist works under the general supervision of the Pharmacy Coordinator and must exercise sound management and judgment in making appropriate decisions in the absence of the Coordinator. He/she assists the coordinator in identifying problems in the assigned area of practice, cooperates in their resolution, and participates in training pharmacy interns and externs.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the dispensing of drugs and other appropriate pharmaceuticals to meet patients' needs.
  • Identifies and monitors patients' pharmaceutical needs.
  • Reviews drug‑related information to identify potential issues with drug therapy and recommends appropriate solutions.
  • Verifies medication orders (prescriptions) for completeness and legality, and checks prepared medications for appropriate dose, route, frequency, duration and patient.
  • Provides immediate and direct supervision of supportive personnel assigned to the shift.
  • Participates, as assigned, in the experiential and didactic education and training of pharmacy students, residents, and support staff.
  • Provides drug and poison information for patients, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals.
  • Conducts clinic medication reviews in a timely fashion as assigned.
  • Assists in the performance evaluation of area supportive staff.
  • Evaluates and monitors patients’ responses to drug therapy in accordance with standards of practice.
  • Counsels patients appropriately about the proper use of their medications.
  • Ensures and promotes customer service and total quality management.
Education/Experience Required
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. Registered pharmacist, license in the State of Michigan.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively disseminate drug information to all levels of health personnel.
  • Knowledge and ability to work collaboratively to develop improved patient services, understanding of pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of disease states.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with pharmacy computer order entry systems.
