General Statement
The Eastern Shoshone Tribe seeks a dedicated and experienced Curator to lead the preservation, management, and presentation of the Tribe's extensive cultural collections. The Curator will play a vital role in developing the Tribe's Interpretive Plan, establishing best practices for collections management, and preparing the collections for eventual transition to the new Cultural Hub. This role includes collaborating closely with Tribal leadership, elders, and community members to ensure that the Tribe's history, traditions, and cultural heritage are accurately and respectfully represented.
Qualifications- Education:
B.A. or higher in Museum Studies, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, or a related field. - Experience:
Minimum 3 years in collections management, Indigenous cultural preservation, or museum curation. Prior experience with Indigenous collections is highly preferred. - Skills:
- Proficiency in collections management software and digitization tools.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Knowledge of climate control standards for artifact preservation.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities.
- Interpretive Plan Development:
Collaborate with consultants, Tribal leaders, and cultural experts to create an Interpretive Plan that aligns with the Tribe's cultural preservation goals; engage with the Tribal community to gather input and incorporate local perspectives, traditions, and stories into the plan. - Collections Management:
Lead the comprehensive inventory, cataloging, and condition assessment of collections housed in the Eastern Shoshone Archives and Cultural Center; ensure collections are documented following best practices, with particular attention to Indigenous cultural preservation standards. - Storage and Preservation:
Oversee the rehousing of collections in appropriate archival materials and manage climate-controlled storage to safeguard artifacts from deterioration; coordinate the safe transfer of collections to secure storage if necessary, focusing on climate and humidity control. - Community Engagement and
Education:
Facilitate community workshops, consultations, and feedback sessions to involve Tribal members in collections management and interpretive planning; develop educational programs and exhibits to deepen community knowledge and connection with the collections. - Digital Access and Virtual Exhibits:
Work with consultants to digitize collections and develop a virtual museum, increasing accessibility and engagement for Tribal members and the public.
