Job Summary

• Arrive on time. Check in at the building office and clock in.
• Review the sub folder provided at the office.
• Keep your students under supervision. Be attentive, never leave the classroom unattended.
• The successful substitute is actively involved with instruction; moving around the classroom often, checking student work and assisting with assignments. Many discipline problems can be avoided by the substitute's use of proximity to the students.
• Strive to carry out the lesson plans left by the instructor. You are expected to follow these.
• Remain on duty. If there is an unforeseen need to leave the building check out at the office.
• Direct any outsider to the office including those seeking information about a student or requesting permission to take the child from the room. Under NO circumstances should a student be released without permission from the appropriate school personnel.
• Fire exits, fire drills, severe storm and tornado-warning procedures should be posted in each room. Familiarize yourself with them.
• Be consistent and emphasize the positive. Maintain a clear, pleasant voice. Leave detailed records of student behavior, both good and bad. Contact the building principal should a situation arise.
• Maintain a high standard of professional appearance and hygiene. Dress for success. Business casual attire is appropriate. T-shirts, and shorts should not be worn.
• Use appropriate language. Be aware of your teacher/student relationship and avoid physical contact, comments, gestures and conversations which violate the relationship.
• Supervision of students is a priority in the district. Substitutes who are responsible for supervising students must concentrate on that task at all times. Substitutes shall not use communication devices when they are responsible for supervising students.
• Leave a written report for the teacher in the sub folder to be returned to the office. Check papers, unless otherwise instructed. Ensure that the room is in order, i.e., lights out, windows closed, educational materials put away.

Qualifications

To substitute teach in Wyoming, you must apply for a Substitute Teacher Permit. This permit is valid for five years and is eligible for renewal.
