Job Title

Assistant Professor

Job Purpose

The Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geophysics, beginning in the Fall semester of 2026. We seek a dynamic and innovative scientist who will develop an internationally recognized, externally funded research program and contribute to excellence in teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

We welcome applicants from all areas of geophysics, including but not limited to seismology, potential fields, electromagnetism, geodynamics, geophysical engineering, environmental geophysics, geodesy, or near‑surface geophysics. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research complements and expands existing departmental strengths and addresses fundamental Earth science questions using geophysical methods. Outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank.

The successful candidate will have access to the UW Near‑Surface Geophysics Instrument Center, a core facility that houses approximately $3.1M of geophysical and direct sampling instrumentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a robust, externally funded research program.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geophysics.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. student research.
  • Collaborate with departmental faculty, other researchers at UW, and national/international partners.
  • Participate in departmental, university, and professional service.
Work Location

On‑campus:
This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work on campus.

Work Authorization Requirements

Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position, conditioned on the non‑applicability of the fees implemented in 90 FR 46027 to the visa petition.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
