GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead our Construction Program in Pinedale, Wyoming. This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing all phases of highway construction and contract administration—from initial design through construction completion and project record finalization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage reconstruction and maintenance projects for a variety of infrastructure types, including:

    • Bridges
    • Interstate and state highways
    • County roads and city streets
    • Public buildings
  • Supervise, train, and mentor a team of technicians and engineers involved in project design and contract administration.

  • Coordinate with federal, state, county, and city agencies, as well as utility companies, landowners, and the public, ensuring effective communication throughout the lifecycle of each project.

  • Apply professional engineering standards and practices to deliver high-quality projects on schedule and within budget.

  • Maintain a strong focus on safety and risk management, working to complete projects without claims or accidents.

Pinedale, Wyoming, lies along the Continental Divide and showcases much of the state’s natural beauty. Nestled between the Wind River Range, the Gros Ventre Range, and the Wyoming Range, the town is a gateway to outdoor adventure. It sits near the Bridger Wilderness Area, just 78 miles south of Jackson and 90 miles from Yellowstone National Park. Pinedale offers easy access to mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, and a variety of other outdoor activities.

Each year, the town hosts the Green River Rendezvous—a reenactment of historic fur trade gatherings—at the nearby Upper Green River Rendezvous Site in Daniel. As a bonus for residents and visitors alike, Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the documentation of project quantities and payment.
  • Responsible for negotiating and securing agreements with landowners, government agencies, and consultants.
  • Responsible for meeting the requirements ofDEQ, BLM, USFS, and other agencies on projects.
  • Coordinate and develop consensus among representatives of the city, county, federal, and the department, and the general public and special interest groups to address project impacts and effects at the design and construction level.
  • Research, locate, and negotiate materials, survey, water, and plant site agreements with private landowners, businesses, and government agencies.
  • Generate special provisions for all projects to address issues unique to each project.
  • Initiate and monitor consultant agreements and progress to provide various surveying and engineering services.
  • Generate plans, summaries, and estimates for maintenance projects.
  • Resolve and recommend a resolution of contractor disputes and claims.
  • Review, generate, and negotiate change orders.
  • Provide fundamental and supplemental training to subordinates.
  • Responsible for determining equipment, workforce needs, and budget requirements.
  • Manages, coordinates, and organizes field inspections, surveys, laboratory testing, material analysis, and quality control to ensure the project is constructed in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Prepares technical engineering studies and/or summaries for a variety of projects.
  • Responsible for the development of plans and documents.
  • Responsible for determining equipment & workforce needs & budget requirements.
