General Summary

Under the proximate supervision of a practitioner, the non-credentialed Respiratory Therapist Assistant (RTA), performs respiratory care procedures.

Employment as a non-credentialed Respiratory Therapist Assistant (RTA), expires on the earliest of the following:

  • The date the employee is issued a license in Respiratory Therapy;
  • The date the employee ceases to be a student in good standing in a respiratory care program;
  • Six (6) months after the date that the employee graduates from a respiratory care program.
Requirements
  • Recent graduate, or currently enrolled and in good standing in a respiratory care program.
  • Must be BLS certified.
  • Successful completion of one full year in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • A non-credential Respiratory Therapist Assistant (RTA) may only perform respiratory care procedures that have been part of a course the individual has successfully completed in the respiratory care program and for which the successful completion has been documented.
  • The procedures permitted may be performed only:
    • on adult patients who are not critical care patients; and
    • under the proximate supervision of a practitioner.
    • “Proximate supervision” means a situation in which an individual is:
    • responsible for directing the actions of another individual; and
    • in the facility and is physically close enough to be readily available if needed by the supervised individual.
  • An RTA shall meet in person at least one (1) time each working day with their supervising practitioner or a designated respiratory care practitioner to review the RTA’s clinical activities. The supervising practitioner or a designated respiratory care practitioner shall review and countersign the entries that the RTA makes in a patient’s medical record not more than seven (7) calendar days after the RTA makes the entries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to:
    Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols, and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
