Seasonal Park Ranger (Climbing)
Location: Grand Teton National Park and the John
D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, Wyoming (Moose and Colter Bay).
Pay: GS‑05 $ 19.52 per hour; GS‑07 $ 24.18 per hour.
Entry on Duty: May 2026. Positions may be filled for a six‑month seasonal period; duration may vary due to weather, project needs, or funding.
Duties- Provide Emergency Medical Services in both front country and remote backcountry, including incident command, emergency response, and rescue operations.
- Conduct climbing patrols, searches, and rescues in high alpine environments; climb un‑roped on 4th and easy 5th‑class alpine terrain.
- Lead technical ice climbing routes rated WI3/AI3 or harder, and alpine climbing routes rated 5.9 or higher (5.7 or higher for GS‑05). Lead or participate in helicopter rescues and technical rope rescues in alpine settings.
- Respond to incidents carrying loads up to 50 pounds at elevations up to 14,000 feet; perform ground searches of up to 20 miles per day on mountainous terrain.
- Provide climbing route and conditions information, issue backcountry permits, and educate visitors on permit regulations, wilderness ethics, and leave‑no‑trace practices.
- Manage backcountry impacts by monitoring, evaluating, and mitigating resource degradation.
Regular strenuous physical exertion: climbing, hiking, and lifting heavy objects on uneven, steep, slippery, and rugged terrain. Work is outdoors, often under temperatures ranging from 90°F to below zero, at night, or in severe mountain weather.
Work EnvironmentOutdoor and remote; often near helicopters; may require short‑haul operations to backcountry locations.
Requirements- U.S. citizenship.
- Subject to background investigation, Selective Service registration for males, drug testing, and random drug testing.
- Valid driver’s license; complete driving record required.
- Eligibility for on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work, or occasional overnight travel.
- Minimum age 18 years.
Minimum qualifications for GS‑05 and GS‑07 include mandatory climbing and emergency response certifications in addition to either specialized experience or education.
- GS‑05: Must have led or shared leads on at least one Grade III 5.7 (or higher) traditional rock climb and one ice climb rated WI3 or AI3. Must possess Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Wilderness EMR certification. Eligible experience: at least one year of specialized experience comparable to a GS‑04, or a bachelor’s degree (120 semester hours) or a combination of both.
- GS‑07: Must have led or shared leads on at least five Grade IV 5.9 (or higher) traditional climbs and one ice climb rated WI3 or AI3, plus aid climbs of Aid 2 (A2) or Clean Aid 2 (C2). Must possess Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Wilderness EMT certification. Eligible experience: at least one year of specialized experience comparable to a GS‑05, or a full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation, or a combination of both.
