High School Assistant Track Coach – Big Horn County School District 3

Qualifications:

  • Has the ability to help organize and supervise a complete sports program.
  • Preferred: has previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
  • Has or can obtain a PTSB certification for an assistant track coach.

Reports To: The middle school or high school head coach.

Job Goal: To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for individual and team success, and to promote socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, confidence and pride.

General:

  • The success of athletic programs heavily influences community image; public exposure and performance pressure are significant responsibilities but must not override sportsmanship and mental health objectives.
  • The position includes unusual aspects such as extended hours, injury risk, and due‑process predicaments.
  • This description provides guidance for unspecified situations, assuming common sense and good judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Know and implement all athletic policies approved by the Big Horn County School District #3 Board of Education.
  • Know existing system, state and league regulations; implement consistently and interpret for staff.
  • Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests through proper channels; attend required meetings.
  • Establish fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques for staff; design conferences, clinics and meetings.
  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth and clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate assistants.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances and increase morale.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
  • Assist head coach in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Assist in preparation to hold scheduled events or practices and coordinate with maintenance staff.
  • Assure documentation for physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Provide safeguards for equipment sites; advise athletic director on policy changes.
  • Serve as mentor to athletes, promote trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
  • Monitor grades and conduct; provide guidance at all practices and games.
  • Provide training rules and regulations of the sport to athletes.
  • Initiate injury, medical attention and emergency policies.
  • Complete paperwork on disabling injuries and submit within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants and statisticians; determine discipline and due‑process procedures.
  • Assist athletes in college or advanced education selection.
  • Participate in budgeting with athletic director; recommend equipment guidelines; maintain budget appropriations.
  • Account for all equipment and collect cost of lost items; handle issuance, storage, reconditioning and inventory reports.
  • Mark and identify all equipment; monitor equipment rooms and authorize access.
  • Ensure athletes use authorized areas at appropriate times; inspect locker rooms for cleanliness; maintain equipment cleanliness.
  • Secure building facilities; instill respect for equipment and school property.
  • Help organize parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promote sport within the school and externally through media, recruitment and community programs.
  • Oversee quality of releases to media; maintain good public relations with stakeholders.
  • Present information to media regarding schedules, tournaments and results.
  • Requires a State of Wyoming PTSB endorsement or permit as an assistant coach.
