Location: Pinedale

General Description

The Habitat and Access Specialist performs a wide range of land management and maintenance duties that support the development and stewardship of Wildlife Habitat Management Areas (WHMAs), elk feedgrounds, and Public Access Areas (PAAs).

Based in Pinedale, Wyoming, this position works as part of the Habitat & Access crew to repair and maintain hay sheds, stack yards, corrals, sleighs, elk traps, feeding areas, irrigation systems, irrigated meadows, fences, and roads on elk feedgrounds throughout western Wyoming. The role may also assist with elk feedground operations as needed.

In addition, the Specialist helps maintain wetlands, irrigation systems, meadows, farm fields, fences, roads, signs, and public facilities—including restrooms, boat ramps, docks, and camping areas—on WHMAs and PAAs owned or managed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. The position also supports general maintenance at regional offices and housing, and assists with a variety of project requests from other divisions.

Essential Functions
  • Irrigation – flood and gated pipe
  • Fence construction and maintenance – elk fence and stock fence
  • Basic carpentry - hay shed, building, horse corral repairs
  • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment up to 250 hp tractors and implements. Haying – cutting, raking, baling, and stacking 3x3 size hay bales
  • Chainsaw operation
  • Weed identification and control
  • Wetland management
  • ATV/UTV and snowmobile operation and maintenance
  • WHMAs and PAAs maintenance
  • Office building and grounds maintenance
  • Operation of heavy equipment (backhoes, skid steers, dozers, telescopic lifts, and other equipment)
  • Operation of power tools, 4x4 pickups, and trailers (gooseneck & bumper pull)
  • Provide outreach information and assistance to the public
  • Work on other projects that improve or develop aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitats within the state
  • Position could require overnight travel that requires staying in campers, tents, or cabins with other personnel
  • Position will perform other duties as assigned
Preferences / Agency Requirements

Preference will be given to those with a farm or ranch background or experience related to range management, fish and wildlife resource management, and habitat development.

Preference will be given to those with a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management, range management, ecology, biology, zoology, or a closely related field.

Must have a valid driver's license.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience in farming
  • Knowledge of wildlife management, natural resource management, range management, wetland management, and habitat management
  • Must be able to effectively and safely operate trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, tractors, ATVs, power tools, and hand tools
  • Skill in written and oral communication and in interpersonal relations
  • Ability to work alone, show initiative, and exercise independent judgment
  • Skill in organizing, planning, prioritizing, and managing time
  • Ability to listen, be a team player, and communicate with other employees and the public
  • Knowledge of construction principles and basic carpentry
  • Knowledge of safe work practices

Physical Working Conditions
  • Extended stays in the outdoors
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Position will often work independently, working outside in all weather conditions
  • Requires strength and stamina to work in extreme outdoor conditions and pack heavy supplies to remote locations
  • Must be able to effectively and safely operate trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, tractors, ATVs, power tools, and hand tools

  • Position located in Pinedale will run from March 1, 2026, through November 30, 2026.
