Overview
Join the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) as a Professional Scientist (Natural Resources Analyst, ENNR
09) and specialize in Wyoming's geology and petroleum resources. This position offers a unique opportunity to delve into subsurface resource potential, hydrocarbon generation, mountain building, and basin formation, contributing to the WSGS’ mission of promoting the beneficial and environmentally sound use of Wyoming's geologic, mineral, and energy resources.
Education: Bachelor's degree in the sciences or a closely related field (master's degree in geology preferred).
Experience: 0–3 years of progressive work experience in geology with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resource Specialist.
Skills: Strong writing and public‑speaking skills; familiarity with subsurface geologic interpretation software (e.g., Petra), GIS (Arc Pro), and well log interpretation; broad background in petroleum geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, economic geology, or airborne geophysics; strong collaboration skills; ability to conduct independent office and field work.
Wyoming Geology: Familiarity with Wyoming's geology and natural resources is a strong plus.
Essential Functions- Data analysis:
Use subsurface geological data to determine structure and stratigraphy of Wyoming's basins. - Mapping and modeling:
Create detailed 2D and 3D geological maps and models using advanced software. - Fieldwork:
Plan and conduct field studies to collect geological samples, map bedrock, and document formations through measured strati graphic sections. - Reporting:
Prepare detailed technical reports summarizing findings and providing recommendations. - Project management:
Assist in managing projects, including budgeting and timeline management. - Resource forecasting:
Forecast trends in oil and gas pricing and production for state revenue planning. - Public outreach:
Deliver engaging presentations and represent the agency at public outreach events.
- Master's degree in geology with a background in oil and gas geology, carbon sequestration, airborne geophysics, geologic modeling, groundwater, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, or economic geology.
- 2D and 3D geological mapping/modeling experience.
- Data analysis proficiency.
- Geologic software: GIS and subsurface interpretation software familiarity.
- Communication skills:
Strong written and verbal communication for reports and public speaking. - Wyoming geology familiarity.
Education: Bachelor's degree in the sciences.
Experience: 0–3 years progressive work experience in geology; OR 4–6 years work experience with knowledge at the natural resources specialist level.

Physical Working ConditionsOccasional travel to the field; ability to perform strenuous work in difficult environments and operate a state vehicle.
