Duties

The major duties of the Mason position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance, repair, alteration and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of brick, stone and block. Repairs and maintains historic masonry on buildings, parapets, and boundary fences, chimneys, and fireplaces. Must be able to match existing historic surfaces.
  • Must have a comprehensive knowledge of mixing techniques, applications, etc. Must have extensive skills in cutting and shaping block, brick, and stone. Incumbent must be able to remove portions of walls, partitions or other similar structures and repair in kind, and for the installation of doors and windows.
  • Must be able to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently and determine the layout and work sequences.
  • In addition to laying whole brick in straight, horizontal rows, must be able to perform a variety of more complex brickwork.
  • Must be able match existing historic surfaces.
  • Must have a comprehensive knowledge of concrete.
  • Must have extensive skills in cutting and shaping block and stone.

    Conditions of Employment
    • U.S. Citizenship required.
    • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
    • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
    • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
    • Depending on location, government housing may be available.
    • May be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
    • May be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
    • May be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
    • Will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver's license is required. Must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record, and, at own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose valid driver's licenses, whether current or past.
    • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or be awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education;

      or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part‑time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
    Education

    There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
