GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Wyoming Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician in Elk Mountain, Wyoming. This position offers the opportunity to support the safety and reliability of the state’s roadway system while enjoying the unique lifestyle and natural beauty of the Elk Mountain region.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
  • Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway‑related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information in order to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
  • Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification
KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience Substitution

  • 2‑4 years of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
