Job Description - Physician Assistant ) Wythe Family Care Center SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Physician Assistant is directly responsible to the physician and has the responsibility for overall direction, utilization, supervision, instruction, treatment and evaluation of patients assigned. The Physician Assistant organizes and conducts medical care programs to facilitate maximum wellness and rehabilitation of patients assigned under direct supervision and responsibility of the attending physician. Programs are adapted within the scope of practice as outlined in the Physician Assistant practice agreement/protocol to individual patient needs.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES A Supervision—To supervise the activities of their area of the clinic including:
  • Formulates treatment plans and works with patients on an individual basis under the general supervision and responsibility of the supervising physician
  • Has an understanding and knowledge regarding the total aspect of a patient’s illness or injury and the ability to assess the needs of the patient and plan accordingly
  • Maintains open communication to supervising physician(s) and other community people to maintain quality care/services
B. Evaluations
  • To be responsible for the evaluations of all patients referred
  • To be responsible for completion and submission of all reports pertaining to the patients
  • To see that all referral sources are advised of clinic action with the case referred.
  • Elicit detailed patient histories and make complete physical examinations. Reach tentative diagnosis and order appropriate laboratory tests
C. Treatment
  • To practice consistent with the American Medical Association Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and Standards of Practice policy as developed and within the scope of the practice agreement.
  • To maintain a patient treatment schedule consistent with the needs of the clinic
  • To confer with the person(s) most closely associated with the management of the patient and to keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification and/or progress
  • To treat patients of any age (e.g., infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, elderly, ages 0–120 years), race, creed, gender and disability without bias or prejudice
  • To respect and understand the patient’s right to treatment and right to involvement in treatment decisions
  • To practice ethical responsibility based on the cultural, ethnic and religious beliefs of the patients’ served and applicable law.
D. Records and Reports

As per physician services guidelines, to be responsible for the authentication, preparation and submission of clinic reports, ensuring confidentiality of all records, including:

  • Evaluation reports/summaries
  • Progress reports to referring physicians and agencies
  • Current office visit notes on all patients within their area
  • Special reports as requested by the physician
  • Daily attendance records and summaries of same
E. Meetings and Conferences
  • To attend Clinic/Facility Provider Meetings as required
  • To attend regular clinic meetings to:
    • Report on and discuss activities and needs of clinic
    • Discuss patient’s needs and progress
    • Discuss reports and records
    • Discuss expansion in terms of future goals and needs.
  • To see that all clinic routines and procedures are carried out as outlined
F. Professional Status and Public Relations
  • To keep abreast of new techniques and trends in the field of medicine
  • To attend conventions, meetings or special courses whenever possible and to share with the clinic personnel information gained thereby
  • To prepare and give talks to community groups as requested
  • To maintain good public relations with all community sources
G. Delegation of Responsibility

To delegate portions of the above listed duties to clinic personnel, with approval of the physician and/or the director and in line with the best use of time and experience of such personnel

H. New Personnel
  • To assist with recruitment of applicants for positions
  • To orient new personnel to the program and procedures
I. Clinic/Facility Personnel

To evaluate, and report at regular intervals, the work of other employees or volunteers within their area of the clinic
