DescriptionAdministers anesthetic care for patients requiring anesthesia, sedation, and/or pain relief therapy. The staff anesthetist is responsible for all aspects of anesthesia administration, including the proper documentation of all actions taken. The major functions delineated in this position description and performance evaluation are performed with the needs of each age group, from infancy to geriatrics, considered in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
Anesthesia is administered under the medical direction of the anesthesiologist or operating physician. The anesthetist works interactively with the anesthesiologist, surgeons, and other members of the surgical care team. The anesthetist is guided by the Standards of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, State Practice Act and Wythe County Community Hospital policies and procedures.
- Assessment - performs pre-operative and post-operative evaluation on patients.
- Planning - collaboratively develops the anesthesia care plan with the anesthesiologist, surgeon and patient.
- Implementation - administers and maintains anesthesia within scope of practice, utilizing appropriate equipment and safety procedures.
- Evaluation - continually evaluates the patient's response to anesthesia during all operative phases.
- Communication - effectively communicates with all members of the surgical care team.
- Graduate of a school of nursing and a school of anesthesia.
- Certification - American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
- Licensure - Current Virginia Registered Nurse license.
- BLS Course.
Experience and/or training in current intravenous, general and regional techniques of anesthesia.
Credentials must be approved for initial and biannual credentialing through the committee of the Medical Staff and Board of Directors.
