PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To assist the head coach in teaching and directing various skills and activities related to cheer (fall and winter) in practices, performances, competitions, and parades.
THIS POSITION IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: West Valley High School Principal, Head Cheer Coach, West Valley High School Athletic Director, and Activities Director (fundraising, assemblies, and student activities).

- Dates Activity Starts and Finishes (approximate): August-March
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Number of students under your supervision: 15-25
- Equipment Procurement: Possible
- Equipment Care, Maintenance and Inventory: Possible
- Duties:
- Attend coaches meetings, parents meetings, practice sessions, competitions & community events (parades, etc.)
- Attend safety/coaches clinics/schools in accordance with WIAA coaching standards
- Assist in motivating team members and maintain positive rapport with participants and parents.
- Assist head coach to organize, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate practice sessions, competitions and related activities.
- Assist in keeping accurate attendance records for all team members at practices/performances/competitions.
- Assist head coach in scheduling facilities (obtaining, submitting completed facility use forms to the school facilities coordinator)
- Properly help the head coach to manage uniforms, supplies and equipment.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the AD, head coach, staff members, team members and parents.
- Assist the head coach with input to Athletic Director for scheduling of competitions and tournaments.
- Assist in articulating and enforcing WVSD and WIAA rules/regulations for athletes.
- Emphasize safety precautions, and be aware of the best training and injury procedures.
- Assist in overseeing transportation/supervision of team as they practice, travel and compete.
- Attend meetings as called by the athletic/activities director.
- Enforce and follow school athletic/activity policy and cheer by-laws as noted in the ASB and Cheer constitutions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
- Teach and model the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship during practices and contests.
- Assist the head coach in planning and organizing tryouts/selection of new squad in accordance with a written plan.
- Promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct the program in harmony with the total school program.
- Work closely with the AD and coaches to promote the various sports and provide for a quality experience for all student participants.
- Take the required WIAA spirit rules clinic for coaches.
- Take the required WIAA/NFHS stunting clinics.
- Maintain WIAA coaching standards and work toward becoming a “preferred” coach.
Bilingual preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Credentials: Current First Aid/CPR card required, good driving record.
- Education: Minimum of two years of post-secondary education. 4-year degree preferred.
- Experience: Demonstrated competencies in organizing and managing student organizations.
Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication with students and parents.
Acceptable methods of teaching, group management, and inter-personal skills.
Previous high school cheer or dance/drill participation required.
Previous high school or comparable level cheer and/or dance/drill coaching experience highly preferred.
