Boy's/Girl's Assistant Track & Field Coach (Horizontal Jumps)

PRIMARY FUNCTION

To serve as an Assistant Coach of the West Valley Boy’s/Girl’s Track & Field Program, including the coaching of JV and Varsity athletes, with knowledge/experience in the area of horizontal jumps.

THIS POSITION IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO

West Valley High School Principal, Athletic Director, and Head Track & Field Coach.

Dates Activity Starts and Finishes (approximate):
March - May (Spring Sports Season)

Weeks per season/year: 13

Total number of days required with students: 63-78

Number of hours per week with students: 15-30

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duties:
    Attend coach meetings, practice sessions, and meets as scheduled. Assist in organizing and conducting practices and meets, providing the Athletic Director with copies of practice schedules and plans. Assist the head coach and be willing to be mentored by him/her. Assist in articulating and enforcing WVSD and WIAA rules/regulations for athletes. Properly supervise school equipment and facilities usage. Set up an  account and use it to enter athletes in your event area into meets at least 48 hours before the meet.

    Teach and model the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship during practices and contests. Assist in developing a budget for basic equipment (ASB Budget) and for capital needs (Levy/General Budget). Promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct the program in harmony with the total school program. Be thoroughly acquainted with contest rules and ensure that your athletes are aware of them as well.

    Maintain WIAA coaching standards and work toward becoming a “preferred” level coach. Emphasize safety precautions and be aware of the best training and injury procedures. Attend meetings as called by the athletic/activities director. The pre- and post-season (evaluation) meetings are required as part of the coaching contract. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Credentials:
Washington State Teaching Credentials Preferred. Current First Aid/CPR card required. Good driving record required. Willingness to drive a school van required.

Education:

4-year degree preferred.

Experience:

Previous participation/experience at the high school level and/or comparable community program preferred. Knowledge/experience in coaching of sprinters and hurdlers required.

Personal Qualities:
The ability to work with student/athletes and their parents in a professional manner. The successful candidate will work to instill the highest desirable ideals of character and ensure that the welfare of each student/athlete is always held in the highest regard. The candidate should have the ability to be an independent, critical thinker as well as a team player. The ability to plan practices, events, and organize all the necessary materials and persons to carry out the sport/activity is highly valued.

Candidate must be able to consistently meet scheduled responsibilities for practice, coaching preparation, competition, and related activities.

SALARY

DOE. Additional stipend for post-season.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The position of sprint/relay coach must work in conjunction with the hurdle and jump coaches to organize training in such a way as to promote the success of multi-event athletes. While track coaches do not have any off-season responsibilities with regard to training, we do ask that they try to be available for track camp on the first 3 days of spring break, or at a minimum, spend time preparing their athletes.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assisting in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.
