Department of Revenue seeks a motivated public servant to perform sales tax audits, ensuring compliance with state tax laws.
Responsibilities- Research and identify audit candidates.
- Audit businesses ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.
- Evaluate audit candidates and determine the most effective audit approach.
- Verify compliance with all sales, use, and excise tax laws.
- Work with taxpayer representatives, including attorneys, accountants, and bookkeepers.
- Present findings to taxpayers and explain tax laws, policies, and procedures.
- Resolve any areas of concern found as a result of audits.
- Travel within and out of state 10-25% of the time.
- Revenue management.
- Co-workers and fellow sales tax auditors.

- Controllers, CPAs, and accountants.
- Attorneys.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or economics.
- Prior work experience in the accounting field.
- Effective communication and decisiveness based on facts and training.
- Strong work ethic, interpersonal skills, discretion, confidentiality, positive attitude.
- Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or willingness to become knowledgeable.
- Generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) or willingness to become knowledgeable.
- Standards, concepts, and objectives of auditing financial records of all business types or willingness to become knowledgeable.
- Microsoft Office Suite.
- Provide professional and quality customer service.
- Be attentive to all details of the work process.
- Maintain composure and remain focused in stressful situations.
- Manage multiple projects.
- Deal tactfully with others.
- Communicate effectively.
- Conduct audits of accounting systems.
- Work with electronic data and automated accounting systems to extract necessary data.
- Reconstruct income, sales, and expenses to determine taxes owed.
- Be flexible and adapt to various situations outside of the office.
- Read and interpret tax laws.

- Eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
- Will be required to undergo a background investigation.
- Will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9).

- National Career Readiness Certificate is not required.
