Applications Engineer – ASTEC

Location: Yankton, SD

About the Position: The Applications Engineer will size, layout, cost, propose, and audit the performance of material processing systems for customers in the aggregate, mining, industrial, and recycling markets within the Materials Solutions (MS) Group.

Key Deliverables
  • Review and respond to RFQ/RFP documents regarding application requirements, equipment sizing/selection, performance guarantees, and commercial terms.
  • Manage sales opportunities involving MS Group products from inquiry to proposal, through internal management, to post‑sale follow‑up.
  • Develop process flow diagrams and equipment layout drawings for aggregate processing plants and create standard and non‑standard equipment quotations.
  • Advise internal and external customers on proper selection, application, and operation of MS Group products.
  • Assist sales, parts, marketing, product management, engineering, and service departments with development of various deliverables as required.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Gather and evaluate information required to determine proper equipment selection and operational parameters.
  • Collaborate with product management, engineering, and manufacturing personnel to develop non‑standard equipment configurations, costing, and quotation development.
  • Document all activities related to each sales opportunity to ensure clear communication among all parties.
  • Review and confirm job order accuracy as necessary.
  • Attend trade shows and product demonstrations as required.
  • Participate or lead meetings involving Astec personnel, dealer personnel, and customer personnel regarding application reviews and proposal presentations (virtual or in person).
  • Assist project managers and alliance partners with requirements related to the sale and commissioning of system‑type projects.
  • Collaborate to define and evaluate product features, options, and operational characteristics of equipment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Mining, Geological, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD/Inventor or comparable 3‑D design software.
  • Experience operating general office equipment, including PCs and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when dealing with management, sales, dealers, customers, and inter‑company personnel.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations, including equipment and process problem resolution with customers and dealer personnel.
  • Physical ability to visit construction, quarry, and industrial sites (dust, noise, weather exposure) and climb on equipment and aggregate stockpiles.

Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel worldwide by air and auto as required (approximately +/- 8 weeks per year). Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to obtain a passport, and have the financial means to travel when required. Approved expenses will be reimbursed.

Work Environment: The employee will regularly work in an office environment with occasional exposure to a manufacturing shop plant environment.
