Electrical Software/PLC Engineer – ASTEC

About the Position

We design, build, validate and support some of the world’s largest mining, quarrying and material handling equipment. As part of our continuing growth, we are looking for motivated and talented Electrical Engineers with a passion for controls and software engineering.

As part of our team you will be engaged from day one in real‑world projects, designing and developing class‑leading control systems software on a range of mobile and industrial PLC platforms for our corridor crushing, screening and bulk handling equipment as part of our North American team. Your responsibilities include creating control software specifications, software design, validation and lifecycle management to ensure that produced designs meet high standards, are delivered on time and provide end‑operator interface simplicity and ease of use.

Responsibilities
  • Work with the cross‑functional Product Management Team to produce a complete and well‑defined Product Functional Specification before product design starts.
  • Use structured system design techniques to develop product function requirements into an effective control strategy for heavy construction equipment.
  • Apply knowledge of sensor technologies, control device technologies and process automation techniques to enhance operator functionality and reduce equipment downtime.
  • Use worldwide electrical standards to design equipment with maximum market breadth while minimizing redesign.
  • Use structured system design to produce modular electrical hardware designs that are easy to test, diagnose and replace if field service repairs are required.
  • Develop and execute bench tests with the Controls Software Engineer on design modules and code units to ensure proper functionality before integration into the complete equipment design.
  • Use computer‑aided engineering design software and equipment to develop electrical/electronic design drawings and schematics.
  • Lead cross‑functional electrical design reviews, including Design for Manufacturability.
  • Contribute to product documentation, including production work instructions, training manuals, troubleshooting guides and product test plans.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and enhancements for product performance and/or cost reductions.
  • Champion project objectives, including schedule, budget and feature set.
  • Develop new processes and procedures to enhance software and hardware design capabilities.
  • Develop electrical and software test plans for new designs and changes to existing designs, coordinating testing and validation.
  • Participate in cross‑functional software and HMI design reviews.
  • Participate in control software design reviews.
  • Assist customers via telephone or on site to resolve function and application issues.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing to resolve production issues.
  • Collaborate with Service to resolve field and warranty issues.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing and suppliers on component issues.
  • Collaborate with Technical Publication to develop and update manuals.
  • Adhere to all Astec design and coding standards.
  • Perform engineering calculations as required during the design cycle.
  • Follow proper safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science (4‑year) degree in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering or related field.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledgeable in structured system design techniques.
  • Knowledge of network protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, Wireless 802.11, etc.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical engineering drawings.
  • Proficient in electrical systems design and troubleshooting, DC controls design required, AC design highly desired.
  • Creative problem‑solving and innovative solution proposal.
  • Competent at assessing, managing and mitigating project risks.
  • Team‑player with good communication skills.
  • Strong organization and time‑management skills.
  • Willingness to accept responsibility and take on new challenges.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment on a regular basis.
  • Proficiency with personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite.
