Position: Civil Engineering Technician Apprentice (Highways Team)
Location: Yate

Introduction

You will play a key role in supporting the £9 million annual highway maintenance Capital programme. Working alongside our experienced highway maintenance engineers, you will gain the opportunity to develop a wide-ranging skill set that will greatly increase your value to potential employers.

South Gloucestershire Council is the local authority of South Gloucestershire, a unitary authority in the South West of England region. It is administratively separate from the county of Gloucestershire.

What You’ll Do

Working closely with qualified engineers, you will develop proficiency in AutoCAD and produce a wide range of scheme drawings. You will gain experience in preparing bills of quantities and scheme estimates, both essential skills for effective financial and budget management. You will develop a strong understanding of the council’s Geographic Information System (GIS), including its database and mapping systems. You will undertake survey work, using both traditional and modern techniques, and be involved in carriageway surfacing operations, observing the use of specialist equipment and heavy plant.

You will support the design, maintenance and improvement of drainage systems.

Training Outcome

Should you meet the required standards of the role, successfully complete and achieve the apprenticeship, and meet budget expectations, you will be offered a Hay‑graded role.
