Overview

Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Manager, Policy and Planning, as the Senior Legislative Advisor, you provide expert advice and lead initiatives related to the review, development, and amendment of departmental legislation. You will support the Department of Justice in ensuring its statutes and regulations align with GNWT priorities, Executive Council direction, and federal legislation.

In this role, you coordinate legislative projects, guide departmental divisions through legislative processes, and help maintain a strong legislative and policy framework that supports the Department's mandate. You will work closely with legislative drafters, legal counsel, other governments, organizations, and the public as needed.

You must have a demonstrated knowledge of northern peoples, cultures, and communities, with the ability to engage the public in a culturally appropriate manner both orally and in writing across diverse communities, and a commitment to consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, cultural awareness, and sensitivity in the workplace.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert advice on legislation related to departmental programs, operations, and policies.
  • Lead and coordinate the development and amendment of statutes and regulations.
  • Assess departmental policies and programs to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Support policy and planning initiatives across the department.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong understanding of legal and legislative processes, principles, and statutory interpretation.
  • Knowledge of policy development and governance instruments (statutes, regulations, policies, guidelines).
  • Familiarity with NWT and federal legislation relevant to the Department of Justice.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and apply analytical skills to complex issues.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate legislative requirements effectively.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business or public administration with 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Acceptable equivalency is a diploma in business or public administration with 5 years of relevant experience.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is from $45.34 per hour to $54.15 per hour (approximately $88,413 - $105,593) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
