About the jobKey information

Nestled just outside Yeovil, Chilthorne Domer Church School is a warm, welcoming village primary school at the heart of its community. We pride ourselves on creating a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment where our children can thrive.

We are looking to recruit a Caretaker

  • 6 hours per week term time only with additional, claimable hours over holidays depending on need
  • Salary Grade 14 point 6
  • Required to start September 2026
What will I be doing?

We are looking for a reliable, proactive, and practical Caretaker to look after our school buildings and grounds. If you take pride in a job well done, love a bit of DIY, and want to play a key role in keeping our school safe and beautiful for our pupils, we would love to hear from you.

The Role

This is a permanent, part-time role offering 6 hours per week during term time, making it ideal for someone looking for local, flexible work. There will also be opportunities for additional hours during the school holidays to support deeper maintenance projects.
As our Caretaker, you will be the main key holder and responsible for keeping our premises safe, secure, and clean.

Your main duties will include:

  • Security:
Locking and unlocking the premises where needed, setting alarms, and carrying out regular safety checks on locks, fencing, and CCTV.
  • Maintenance & DIY:
Handling minor repairs, small painting or DIY projects, moving furniture, and arranging quotes from external contractors for larger jobs.
  • Health & Safety:
Keeping our environment safe by recording regular checks (like playground equipment and water safety/legionella) and gritting paths during cold weather.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

You don’t need to have worked in a school before, though experience in caretaking, building maintenance, trade work, or security is a big plus! Most importantly, you should be someone who:

  • Has practical, hands-on DIY skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Understands basic health and safety or is willing to learn.
  • Can work independently and flexibly, managing your own time to prioritise what the school needs most.
  • Is reasonably fit and comfortable with manual handling, lifting, and working at heights (e.g., using ladders safely).
  • Is trustworthy, reliable, and deeply committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children (all school staff undergo an enhanced DBS check).
  • Possesses first aid training, or is fully willing to complete it with us.
What is in it for me?
  • Leaders are deeply mindful of good wellbeing for staff and pupils
  • People that feel loved and accepted for who they are
  • Pupils who are taught to be kind and considerate, living this out in caring relationships and excellent behaviour
  • Pupil who are treasured for their uniqueness. This leads to a culture of equity where individual needs are met
  • A calm and respectful atmosphere
  • A staff team who are supportive of one another
  • Governors who work alongside the school staff to ensure the best for our children
  • Opportunities for your own professional development including appropriate training and mentorship depending on your experience.

This post will require a criminal background check via the Disclosure and Barring Service. Application forms are available from the school website.

Supporting documents and information

You will be part of a team of skilled colleagues, governors and parents who are hardworking and inclusive. We continue to be a ‘Good School’ (Ofsted February 2022) and have a ‘vision that inspires a deeply nurturing culture where wellbeing is a priority’ SIAMS (November 2023).

We welcome visits; please telephone the school office to make an appointment.

The school is committed to equal opportunities and to the welfare and safety of children and young people.

Please send a completed application form to the Headteacher, Nichola Chesterton, at the school office.
