Salary RangeEngineer £37k - £42k
Senior Engineer £44k - £50k
Principal Engineer £53k - £60k
Where this vacancy is being recruited across more than one grade, the successful candidate will be appointed to a specific assessed grade, and the applicable salary range will be that associated with the grade of appointment. Leonardo UK operates a grade‑based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range shown reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range published within that band, and is benchmarked against the external market.
Exceptions above the standard range are managed through governance controls to protect internal equity.
As an Avionic Systems Engineer you will work across a range of helicopter platforms including conventional helicopters and uncrewed air systems. You’ll be responsible for the design, verification and support of avionics systems, from initial design through to supporting flight test programmes.
For internal applicants only, we will consider candidates at JFF level 4, 5 and 6.
What You’ll Do- Define, initiate and execute the activities required to design, develop and qualify avionic systems in response to specific customer requirements.
- Work closely with customers to derive system level requirements.
- Manage external suppliers to deliver equipment that meets these requirements.
- Work with systems integration and test to prove and qualify the avionic system.
- Engineering Degree in a relevant subject (Electrical / Electronics / Aeronautical) or equivalent experience.
- A proven background in developing avionics in an aerospace environment (civil or military).
- A specific in‑depth knowledge and recent experience in the design, development, integration and qualification of avionics systems (civil or military).
- A knowledge and appreciation of the full Systems Engineering life cycle.
- Experience with avionics interface protocols, e.g. ARINC‑429, MIL‑STD‑1553B, Ethernet/AFDX.
- Experience creating and editing system documentation.
- Ability to communicate equally across multi‑functional teams and at all levels.
- Experience of integration, qualification and certification of the latest Cockpit Display, Communications, Navigation, Mission or Armament systems.
- Experience in the application of Cyber risk evaluation and assurance requirements for aerospace.
- Experience with aerospace standards, e.g. DEF STAN 970, ARP‑4754, DO‑160, DO‑178, DO‑254.
- Experience in the development of avionics system architectures.
- Knowledge and experience of the challenges associated with uncrewed systems.
