Overview

At Screwfix, we’re building one of the most agile, customer-focused retail businesses in the UK – and our people are at the heart of everything we do. As Director of HR Business Partnering, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering our People strategy, enabling our ambitious growth plans and creating an exceptional colleague experience across our entire estate. Reporting to the Human Resources Director, this is a senior leadership role with real influence – combining strategic impact with hands‑on delivery in a fast-moving, consumer-facing environment.

The Role

As Director of HR Business Partnering, you’ll lead strategic HR partnership across Screwfix, providing expert counsel to senior stakeholders and ensuring our people agenda is fully aligned with commercial priorities. You’ll inspire and develop high-performing HR teams, oversee exceptional operational HR delivery through Shared Services, and play a central role in defining and delivering the People Strategy that underpins operational excellence.

You’ll act as a visible and trusted HR leader, championing our culture and values, driving change with confidence and using insight to shape decisions that support sustainable growth. The role is based at our Head Office in Yeovil, and our expectation is that you would work in a hybrid way with 3 days per week spent here.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver strategic HR business partnering across the full Screwfix estate, supporting transformation and growth
  • Act as a senior, visible HR leader, ensuring consistent delivery of HR change programmes and initiatives across all disciplines
  • Partner with the HR Leadership Team to define and deliver the Screwfix People Strategy, aligned to Group HR priorities
  • Build strong internal and external relationships to influence decision‑making and enable exceptional HR delivery
  • Work closely with the Director of Talent to align capability, skills and development interventions
  • Set the vision for the function, developing team capability and embedding a high-performance, accountable culture
  • Collaborate with senior leaders on strategic workforce planning and proactive talent acquisition
  • Ensure all operational and transactional HR activity is delivered effectively, compliantly and to agreed standards
  • Champion simple, transparent and practical HR products, policies and processes
  • Drive succession planning and talent pipelines within the HR function
  • Embed agile, test‑and‑learn ways of working and a mindset of continuous improvement
  • Use people insight, dashboards and KPIs to focus HR activity on the right priorities
  • Provide an external perspective on the future of work, innovation and organisational effectiveness
  • Contribute to Group people strategies as a key member of the HR Leadership Team
  • Manage functional budgets effectively to maximise impact and return on investment
About You

Required skills & experience

  • A professional qualification or postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Extensive senior‑level, generalist HR experience across all HR disciplines
  • Experience in a large‑scale, fast-moving, multi-site organisation (retail or consumer-facing preferred)
  • A strong commercial mindset, using insight and data to shape people decisions
  • Proven leadership experience, developing capability and raising standards across HR teams
  • Experience of organisational growth, transformation or change programmes
  • Confidence operating within a matrix and/or plc environment
  • A pragmatic, resilient and delivery-focused approach, with high standards and attention to quality
  • The ability to think strategically, plan with vision and translate strategy into action
  • Above all, you’re an inclusive, visible leader who sets clear expectations, champions collaboration and creates an environment where people can do their best work.
