About the Opportunity

We are looking for experienced and compassionate SEN Tutors to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to secondary-aged learners in and around the Bromley area, supporting students from Year 7 through to GCSE.

The learners may have additional needs or circumstances that make attending mainstream school difficult. This could include SEND, anxiety, gaps in education, behavioural or emotional needs, or prolonged absence from school.

As an outreach tutor, you will provide structured and engaging lessons tailored to the individual learner. The aim is not only to improve academic attainment, but also to help students rebuild confidence, develop positive attitudes towards learning and gradually re-engage with education.

Strong secondary-level Maths and English teaching experience is essential. Tutors who can also confidently deliver Science, particularly GCSE Science, will be especially welcomed.

Most assignments provide around 10-15 hours of tuition per learner each week, usually during school hours. Sessions may be delivered in the learner's home, a community setting or another appropriate location.

Learner Profiles

Students may present with a variety of additional needs and barriers to education, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC/ASD)
  • ADHD
  • Dyslexia and dyscalculia
  • Speech and language difficulties
  • SEMH needs
  • School-related anxiety
  • Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
  • Extended periods away from mainstream education
  • Gaps in learning and curriculum access difficulties

Tutors should be confident adapting their teaching style and creating a calm, consistent and encouraging environment for learners who may have found traditional education challenging.

Key Duties
  • Deliver high-quality 1-to-1 tuition to secondary learners from Year 7 through GCSE.
  • Teach Maths and English across the secondary curriculum.
  • Identify learning gaps and respond to individual educational needs.
  • Prepare personalised lesson plans and suitable learning resources.
  • Adapt teaching approaches according to each learner's SEND profile.
  • Support academic development alongside confidence, engagement and independence.
  • Work towards EHCP targets, curriculum objectives and individual learning goals.
  • Provide GCSE preparation where appropriate.
  • Develop positive and trusting relationships with learners.
  • Monitor progress, engagement and achievement throughout the placement.
  • Maintain clear records and provide feedback when required.
  • Communicate appropriately with parents, carers, schools and other professionals.
What We're Looking For

Successful applicants will ideally have:

  • Strong secondary Maths and English teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching students between Year 7 and GCSE.
  • At least two years' experience working with children or young people with SEN/SEND is preferred.
  • Knowledge of effective strategies for supporting different SEND needs.
  • The ability to engage learners who may be anxious, reluctant or disengaged.
  • A patient, flexible and empathetic teaching style.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The confidence to work independently in an outreach setting.
  • Good organisation and lesson-planning skills.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
  • A genuine commitment to helping young people overcome barriers to education.
Subject Requirements

Essential:

  • Maths
  • English

Desirable:

  • Science

Experience delivering GCSE Science would be an advantage.

Additional Experience That Would Be Beneficial

The following qualifications or experience would be advantageous:

  • QTS, PGCE or an equivalent teaching qualification.
  • SEN/SEND qualifications or specialist training.
  • GCSE and/or A-Level teaching experience.
  • Experience working with EHCP targets.
  • Experience in mainstream schools, specialist settings or alternative provision.
  • Previous outreach or home tuition experience.
  • Experience supporting learners with school anxiety, EBSA or prolonged absence.
Why Work With Us?

This is an opportunity to provide meaningful, individualised educational support to young people who may need a different approach to learning.

Rather than working within a traditional classroom environment, you will have the opportunity to focus closely on one learner, adapting your sessions to their needs and helping them make progress both academically and personally.

With ongoing referrals and typical placements of 10-15 hours per learner each week, this role can provide regular and rewarding work for tutors who enjoy making a direct difference.
