Overview
The Civil Engineer will support the delivery of civil engineering design solutions across projects, working closely with Project Managers and senior staff. The role involves technical design, client liaison, and contributing to the successful delivery of projects to programme, budget, and quality standards. The role supports progression towards professional qualification (IEng/CEng) through structured experience aligned with ICE attributes, including technical competence, responsibility, communication, leadership, and professional commitment.
EngineeringKnowledge & Application
- Undertake feasibility, concept, and detailed design for infrastructure projects including drainage, SuDS, highways, levels, and earthworks.
- Apply engineering principles and sound professional judgement to solve technical problems, producing calculations, drawings, and specifications.
- Develop practical, sustainable, and cost‑effective design solutions that consider buildability, risk, and lifecycle performance.
- Maintain working knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022 and the role of the Health and Safety Executive as the Building Safety Regulator, applying relevant requirements to design work, particularly where projects involve higher‑risk buildings or duty‑holder development.
- Support and mentor technicians or junior team members, where appropriate, contributing to knowledge sharing and team development.
- Proactively develop skills and competencies aligned with ICE professional development requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, quality, and delivery.
- Manage and mentor graduates, trainees, and technicians, supporting ICE development objectives and the development of others.
- Plan and oversee project delivery and resources, ensuring performance against programme, budget, quality, and client expectations.
- Monitor utilisation, forecast resource demand, and contribute to the financial performance of projects.
- Drive efficient project execution, promote best practice, and contribute to continuous quality improvement and commercial performance.
- Lead performance reviews (PDRs), support recruitment, and manage team performance.
- Drive compliance with company QMS and continuous improvement of technical standards.
- Act as a key client interface, building and maintaining professional relationships.
- Lead meetings and present technical solutions to clients, regulators, and stakeholders.
- Negotiate and influence outcomes to achieve effective project solutions.
- Contribute to business planning, service development, and growth of client accounts.
- Take ownership of projects of varying scale and complexity.
- Contribute to tender preparation, project planning, business development activities, and sound statutory and commercial decision making.
- Monitor and manage project risks, resources, contractual considerations, and financial performance.
- Champion high standards of health, safety, and risk management in all design activities.
- Promote sustainable and environmentally responsible engineering solutions, recognising whole‑life and climate resilience.
- Ensure compliance with technical standards, legislation, and quality systems.
- Demonstrate commitment to professional ethics, inclusive practice, and best practice.
- Actively support ICE training schemes and mentor team members toward chartership.
- Maintain and evidence ongoing CPD to enhance professional competence.
- 2:1 Degree in a relevant subject / HND+2 / Equivalent experience in drainage and infrastructure design.
- Familiarity with Civil 3D and Micro Drainage/Info Drainage.
- Understanding of highways design (S38, S278) and development infrastructure.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
- 5+ years' experience developing technical independence, sound judgement, and increasing responsibility in project delivery.
- Motivated to achieve ICE professional qualification and progress towards professional review readiness.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and team development capability.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality outcomes.
- Commercial awareness and contribution to business performance.
- Confident leading projects, teams, and client relationships.
- Demonstrates leadership, independent judgement, and professional commitment aligned with ICE Chartered Engineer competencies.
