About Halifax Minster
Halifax Minster is one of the leading Major Churches in the Church of England with a history spanning nearly a thousand years. It serves the local community, Borough of Calderdale, and beyond, offering worship, cultural events, education programmes, and international links.
Role PurposeThis voluntary role provides strategic financial leadership, oversight, and governance for Halifax Minster. The Treasurer will work closely with the PCC and Finance Committee, ensuring financial sustainability, strong controls, and value for money, particularly as the Minster undertakes a significant capital project and modernises its financial systems.
Role Overview- Voluntary role (circa one day per week)
- Supported by a Finance Assistant (30 hours per week) responsible for transactional processing
- Reports to the PCC and Finance Committee
- Provide strategic oversight of the Minster’s finances
- Lead financial planning including budgeting and a three-year rolling forecast
- Oversee preparation of monthly management accounts
- Present management accounts monthly to the Finance Committee and bi-monthly to PCC
- Support preparation of annual statutory accounts and liaise with auditors
- Ensure compliance with Charity Commission and regulatory requirements
- Oversee and review transactional work performed by the Finance Assistant
- Support and develop the Finance Assistant
- Play a key leadership role in a substantial capital project, ensuring value for money and strong financial governance
- Oversee procurement, funding strategy, and financial monitoring of capital works
- Lead upgrade to a cloud-based accounting system
- Maintain strong financial controls and risk management
- Maintain banking, cashflow, payroll oversight, and financial reporting integrity
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) – essential
- Experience in financial leadership and governance
- Experience with capital projects or major investments
- Experience implementing accounting systems (preferably cloud-based)
- Strong communication skills and ability to present to non-financial stakeholders
- High level of integrity and commitment to the mission of Halifax Minster
- Monthly Finance Committee meetings
- Bi-monthly PCC meetings
- Additional time during key periods such as audits, capital project phases, and system implementation
- Approximately one day per week
The Minster has a turnover of approximately £500,000 and has achieved a sustained period of financial surplus. The role offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute professional expertise to a significant community institution.
