Salary grade: N03. Hourly rate: PASNAP Union rates based on years of experience, $43.46–$59.40.

MDA/ALS Center of Hope at Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine is dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. This means that upon visiting the center, the individual with ALS will be seen by a team of healthcare professionals who will approach each case from every medical angle.
During a single visit, the team meets with every member of our team. Although this obviously means that the visit will be long, it also ensures that it is comprehensive. The multidisciplinary approach evolved so that all of the individual’s needs and problems can be addressed at each and every visit. It also allows the team members to communicate much more effectively and share information, improving the quality of care for each patient.
The team at the Center of Hope is devoted to providing optimal care of individuals with ALS as well as providing clinical research opportunities that will lead to improved quality of life and prolonged survival with an ultimate goal of a cure.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- Current license to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of PA.
- ACLS certification required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Experience working with patients with neurological or related disorders.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience in neurology, neurodegenerative disease, complex chronic illness, or related specialty.
- Prior experience in ALS care, neurology clinics, palliative care or hospice.
- Familiarity with academic research protocols, clinical trials, and data collection.
- Co‑ordinate multidisciplinary care during clinic visits and provide nursing assessments.
- Provide comprehensive nursing assessments for patients with ALS, addressing neurological, respiratory, nutritional, functional, and psychosocial needs.
- Monitor disease progression and proactively identify changes requiring clinical intervention or referral.
- Pre‑screen ALS patients prior to clinic visits for prioritizing needs and clinic flow.
- Provide supervision of appropriate scheduling of clinic appointments with the administrative assistants.
- Serve as the primary clinical point of contact for patients and caregivers between clinic visits.
- Serve as the point of contact for handling patient calls related to medical questions. Accurately record all clinical conversations in the EHR and maintain patient records.
- Facilitate transitions of care across inpatient, outpatient, rehabilitation, home health, and end‑of‑life settings along with case management.
- Assist implementation of plans developed during home visits by team members (home PT, OT, Social work, mental health, nurse manager).
- Provide similar support to the care of other neuromuscular patients. Coordinate complex, longitudinal care across multidisciplinary services including neurology, pulmonology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech‑language pathology, nutrition, social work, palliative care, and hospice in conjunction with case management.
- Deliver individualized patient and caregiver education related to ALS disease course, symptom management, medications, respiratory and nutritional support, and assistive technologies.
- Help to identify and overcome barriers which may hinder quality medical patient care.
- Assisting in obtaining required pre‑cert or prior authorization to assure timely approvals of patients' complex treatments and drugs.
