Bus Operator - LA

Job PurposeAs a Bus Operator, you will operate school buses to transport students, faculty, and other passengers to and from school, field trips, athletic events, and other activities, while ensuring safety and compliance with all regulations.
Responsibilities- Operate school buses in compliance with laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Adhere to established schedules to safely pick up, transport, and discharge students and staff.
- Assist students and other passengers to provide safe entrance and exit from buses during emergency situations, bus evacuations, and normal transport.
- Maintain student discipline on the bus.
- Coordinate with school principals and transportation supervisors to resolve minor and serious disciplinary problems.
- Transport students and faculty members on special field trips and to and from athletic events.
- Complete pre-trip inspections and post-trip inspections of buses.
- Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of assigned vehicles.
- Notify leadership promptly of suspected mechanical defects and malfunctioning equipment on assigned vehicles.
- Notice and report any damage to the assigned bus.
- Secure or ensure the proper securing of all occupant restraint systems.
- Assist students in boarding buses; place wheelchairs securely in buses; transport students’ medical apparatuses.
- Respond appropriately in emergency situations, including lifting, carrying, and/or dragging students off the bus.
- Execute emergency evacuation plans for all students with all pertinent information for all groups of students transported.
- Maintain records of bus operations and submit required reports accurately and on time; compile and submit accident report information; report prolonged traffic delays.
- Monitor general and/or special education students until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. to ensure student safety.
- Attend meetings and training sessions.
- Adhere to applicable policies, statutes, and procedures set forth in State Bulletin 119—Louisiana School Transportation and Bulletin 119—Louisiana School Transportation Specifications and Procedures.
- Cooperate with transportation staff on route adjustments throughout the school year.
- Perform other duties as assigned that are related to the functions of the position.
- Proficient in the general use of a computer, email, and other job-specific equipment, software, and/or applications.
- Proven experience in a coordination role.
- Strong decision‑making capabilities.
- Above‑average communication, collaboration, and delegation skills.
- Strong working knowledge of operational procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret a map.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- High school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
- Valid Commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Clean driving record in accordance with the Safe Driver Plan.
- Commercial License Medical Examiner’s Certification.
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Certification.
- School Bus Driver Certificate.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
- Continuing Education/Training/Compliance:
- Monthly safety meetings.
- Annual School Bus Driver Certification.
- Maintain clean driving record in accordance with Safe Drive Plan.
- Maintain background check clearance in accordance with Louisiana Department of Education in conjunction with the Louisiana State Police (LSP) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
- Maintain Commercial License Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
- Driving assessment each semester.

- Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
