Overview
The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is a Gold‑Level Veteran Friendly Employer. This position is responsible for operating a dental appliance laboratory, training and supervising prisoner technicians in the production of dental appliances, inventorying materials, and ensuring quality products meet dental specifications.
Responsibilities• Operate the dental laboratory and supervise prisoner technicians.
• Inventory and track tools and materials related to appliance production.
• Record shipments and receipt of cases and other lab duties.
• Teach prisoners proper use of tools, equipment, and procedures to produce quality dental appliances.
• Follow laboratory standards and procedures to meet specifications.
• Possession of an associate’s degree in dental technology.
• Associate’s degree in dental hygiene or dental assisting with one year of experience equivalent to a Dental Hygienist or Dental Assistant may be substituted for the education requirement.
Experience- Dental Laboratory Technician 8 – No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Dental Laboratory Technician 9 – One year of experience fabricating and repairing prosthetic appliances equivalent to Technician 8.
- Dental Laboratory Technician E10 – Two years of experience fabricating and repairing prosthetic appliances, including one year equivalent to Technician 9.
• Four years of experience in a dental laboratory, dental office, dental manufacturer, or dental setting fabricating and repairing dentures, bridges, crowns, and orthodontic appliances may be substituted for the education requirement.
Additional Requirements• Positions in this class are test‑designated and subject to pre‑appointment and random‑selection drug and alcohol testing.
• MDOC may screen out applicants convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants with a misdemeanor or felony conviction are ineligible until any sentence, including parole or probation, is satisfactorily completed.
• New hires and returning employees who have been away for more than two years must complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) – either 40 hours or 80 hours of in‑person training based on offender contact and job classification, plus supplementary online training.
• All required documents must be submitted at the time of application. Applicants attaching transcripts must provide an official college transcript; unofficial or web‑based transcripts are not accepted.
