Job SummaryServes as a lead technician under the direction of a Resident Engineer or designated representative. Coordinates activities on highway construction projects, including quality control inspections, project lab and project office. Inspects and documents complex items such as structures and concrete/asphalt pavement. Performs related duties as required due to staffing requirements. Schedules and reviews completed work of other employees. Position may involve irregular work hours, daily/occasional overnight travel.
Drives a State Vehicle. Adheres to conduct standards.
- Inspects highway construction continuously to ensure compliance with contract and state, federal standards; examines materials, surface condition, proper tracking, structural features and other factors.
- Samples various construction materials for compliance.
- Uses PEN and FAST computer systems to manage and administer construction projects.
- Prepares project documentation to ensure conformance with applicable laws, rules, regulations and standards.
- Reviews and prepares contract documents related to force accounts, change orders, supplemental agreements.
- Confers with maintenance/construction engineers and contractors regarding construction in progress and its conformance to specifications and plans; resolves issues.
- Develops work schedules, assigns and directs employees to meet overall expectations related to assignments.
- Provides training, coaching and guidance to employees as directed.
- Attends meetings and represents the unit as directed.
- Supports continuous improvement initiatives by evaluating current workflows, identifying inefficiencies and implementing solutions.
- Principles and practices of civil engineering related to the construction of state highway road systems.
- Construction inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
- Construction materials testing procedures.
- Work scheduling and management.
- Analysis and preparation of data.
- Written and verbal communication.
- Operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties.
