Pathologists’ Assistant
Veterans in Healthcare is seeking a Pathologists’ Assistant to support pathologists in the preparation and examination of tissue samples, body fluids, and post‑mortem bodies. The role requires a strong understanding of pathological testing procedures, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high laboratory standards.
Responsibilities- Perform gross examination of surgical, biopsy, and cytology specimens, including dissection, selection, and submission of tissue sections for microscopic review.
- Assist with autopsies and intraoperative frozen section procedures.
- Accession and accurately label specimens; photograph pertinent specimens.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Document findings and keep legible, accurate records.
- Assist in training pathology technicians and histotechnicians in grossing and surgical pathology techniques.
- Collaborate with LIS analysts, IT, physicians, nursing services, and ancillary departments on PIS needs and objectives.
- Plan, direct, and train PIS administration; establish standards in partnership with laboratory leadership.
- Maintain responsibility for slide scanning systems and integration of remote pathology diagnostics.
- Monitor regulatory compliance and design workflows to maintain patient safety.
- Participate in continual quality improvements within the Department of Pathology.
- Assist with Tumor Board activities, including slide scanning and selection.
- Collaborate with the system‑wide healthcare team to establish measurable objectives and perform related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Pathology or a related field, with CLIA equivalent education.
- Certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of human anatomy, pathological processes, and surgical techniques.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- 2 years of related experience.
- Experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of laboratory accreditation processes and quality assurance programs.
The base hiring salary range is:
- Minimum: $49.40 per hour
- Mid: $61.74 per hour
- Maximum: $74.09 per hour
