Position: Patient Access Counselor | Support Center | Days

Work Status Details: REGULAR FULL TIME | 80.00 Hours Every Two Weeks.

Base hiring salary range:
Min $16.00, Mid $18.40, Max $20.80. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to skills and experience.

Summary

The Patient Access Counselor is responsible for facilitating a positive patient experience through friendly coordination and advocacy in reception, pre‑registration, registration, scheduling and other interactions during the patient stay in the facility. This role assists in proper identification of patients, collects demographics, verifies insurance and eligibility, provides financial counseling, cashiering, notification, authorization, government program advocacy, and anticipates/responds to non‑clinical needs of patients and their families.

The counselor initiates, follows‑up, and coordinates with patients, families, and outside agencies for Medicaid, AHCCCS, Marketplace, and YRMC Financial Assistance and maintains assigned work queues in relation to Patient Access and the Revenue Cycle.

Responsibilities
  • Perform registration and pre‑registration for outpatient services and patient interactions during the stay.
  • Assist in patient identification, collection of demographics, financial counseling, cashiering, and advocacy for governmental programs.
  • Schedule and transcribe patient appointments and procedures, scheduling procedures for outpatient services following established guidelines.
  • Obtain required admission information (insurance, demographics) and ensure accurate medical record creation.
  • Collect registration paperwork (COA, IP Medicare and Tricare Bill of Rights, Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice, HIPAA privacy practice, Patient Bill of Rights, and financial assistance) and accurately input data into the computer system.
  • Promote accurate billing information and obtain insurance cards/forms and other documents for billing.
  • Verify that names and  match those in the system, entering insurance information accurately.
  • Maintain knowledge of patient coverage regulations, ICD9/ICD
    10, CPT, HCPCS, and related billing requirements.
  • Educate patients and families on guidelines, policies, and standards set by YRMC, CMS, or other governing agencies.
  • Complete financial counseling, assess financial responsibility, determine charity care assistance, and obtain necessary documentation.
  • Review billing files and insurance coverage to ensure accuracy and complete documentation.
  • Review accounts for possible bad debt and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Initiate AHCCCS and Marketplace applications for appropriate cases.
  • Maintain continuous education associated with programs and follow‑up work.
  • Accurately collect, count, and post money to appropriate accounts, post payments, and settle credit card machine transactions.
  • Maintain cash drawer receipts, required bank deposits, and petty cash balances.
  • Maintain assigned work queues and ensure all patient encounters are documented in the electronic health record.
  • Complete insurance verification, authorization, and pre‑authorization processes.
  • Contact third‑party payers for verification, authorization, and pre‑certification.
  • Ensure required signatures and notifications are completed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Credentials
  • Arizona fingerprint clearance.
Education
  • High school diploma or GED.
