Salary Information
This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer.
NATURE OF WORKUnder general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the environmental health field to inspect, analyze and enforce public health regulations and requirements; this position has department specific responsibility.
Educate, train, and advise operators on code requirements and assist with implementation of operational changes to meet standards; investigate food/waterborne disease outbreaks; inspect and monitor special event stands and farmer's market stands; inspects a variety of entities for compliance with various legal codes governing sanitary conditions; inspect licensed public swimming pools, lodging facilities septic systems, and children's camps for compliance with state and county ordinances;
address public complaints related to food safety public health nuisances; develop educational materials on various environmental public health topics for the public; participate in Public Health Emergency Preparedness planning, training, and response; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; recommend enforcement measures to supervisor; secure compliance with pertinent regulations by promotion, education and enforcement;
inspect and design individual sewage systems; collect water, air and food samples for laboratory analysis; interpret analysis results based upon established sanitation principles; review plans and specifications submitted for all eating and drinking establishments; prepare and present reports on investigations, inspections and recommendations; maintain records; perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in natural sciences, environmental health or related field and two (2) years work experience as a Registered Sanitarian; must possess a current certificate as a Registered Sanitarian by the State of Arizona and must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license; requires successful completion of a background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of Yuma County organization, operations, policies, and procedures; relevant federal, state, and county codes, laws, and regulations pertaining to environmental health and sanitation; biological and physical science applicable to environmental health; filed inspection methods and techniques.
- Skill in collecting and analyzing samples; preparing reports and presenting facts clearly, orally and in writing; conducting investigations relating to environmental/ public health compliance issues; maintaining complete and accurate records; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
- Ability to inspect, analyze, and make determination regarding environmental/public health conditions; maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; follow written and verbal instructions; lift forty (40) pounds, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, stand, and walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; perform other body movements consistent with the job responsibilities and work outdoors exposed to extreme climate;
perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation.
