We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as an Assistant City Prosecutor working with the City Attorney. The ideal candidate represents the City in accordance with City Prosecutor & City Attorney instructions and standard protocols.

Under general supervision, job classification represents the City at all stages of the prosecution of misdemeanors and petty offenses, civil traffic offenses, and civil marijuana offenses, City Code violations, and administrative code violations, from charging to post‑conviction appeals; conducts legal research; prepares pleadings. This is an entry level position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Represents the City in prosecuting persons charged with misdemeanors, petty offenses, civil traffic offenses, civil marijuana offenses, City Code violations, and Administrative Code violations.
  • Reviews and evaluates charging requests, citations, motions and other law enforcement documents for jurisdictional and statutory conditions; gathers facts and data; conducts factual and legal analysis to determine whether charges should be filed, declined, dismissed, or settled.
  • Prosecutes, dismisses and settles cases in accordance with City Prosecutor & City Attorney instructions and standard protocols.
  • Creates legal documents, and compiles and presents evidence; brings cases before the court and argues facts of the case in relation to points of law, case law and legal precedent.
  • Coordinates with Yuma Police Department, members of other law enforcement agencies, and other involved parties to establish and verify basis for prosecution or dismissal based on burden of proof.
  • Assists with contracts, torts, constitutional law, land use, or other civil legal assignments as needed.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

Juris Doctorate Degree is required; AND one year legal experience or clerkship, internship, externship; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge of:
  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • State of Arizona criminal and civil statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures, Yuma Municipal Court rules and procedures, City of Yuma ordinances, and applicable Federal rules and regulations.
  • Arizona judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Victim rights.
  • Federal case law regulating prosecutions and constitutional rights.
  • Principles and protocols for the evidentiary gathering of information, documents, financial records and other data that may be used in court.
  • Procedures and protocols for trial court, arraignment, and other public legal proceedings.
